                                Danville  30  July  1863

                                              Thursday

My beloved wife,

I came over here from the

Court House on Tuesday evening and on the next

day,  yesterday, received your letter of  21. st    it may

have arrived here on the day before but could not

have been here longer because [?] have

been forwarded to me from [crossed out]  [?] the C.H.  The

transportation by mail is certainly dilatory.

I am truly delighted my dearest wife,

that you and dear Pagey & Bob are all so

well & enjoying so much satisfaction;  give

my best love to both.  Also kindest regards to'

the Pendleton's with sincere congratulations for

the safety of the General and his son.

I wrote to you about  a week ago from the

Court House, and should have written again on

Sunday or Monday but that Mr. Wilmer wrote

on Monday & I had many letters to write

and much business to do.  Whilst I was at

the C. House I districted the county and ap-

-pointed the county agent and one other; the

rest ( some 7 or 8)  not being yet required

Mr. Wilmer declined the county agency

and I gave it to Mr. Johnson whom I set at once

to travelling about the county.  I shall return to

I recd. a letter to day from James Semple.  He &  Mrs. S wish to know if the

arrangement is a fixed one as to you and Mrs. S. keeping house in Col. Bennett's house  when

Mr. Vest shall leave it. He (Mr. V.)has purchased a place as I wrote  you.  Mention

this in your next.

the C.H. on Saturday and my present intention

is to go to Franklin next week and district

that county and thence proceed to Bedford for

a similar purpose.  You had better direct your

next letter to Liberty, Bedford Co, care of

Capt.  Charles K. Mallory.     I heard from

Lelia the other day & wrote to her requesting

her to [?] [?].      I believe I mentioned to

you in my last letter what were the variations

in the tidings concerning the relations of our

friends around the C.H.   At any rate this is the

account so far as I know.   Col. Carrington

wounded in the head and captured.  Col. Martin supposed

killed.  Capt.  James Poindexter supposed captured;

Lieut. Hutchkins Carter same-both missing- Col. Whittle

wounded and not a prisoner. Col. Patton wounded

and a prisoner.     Young Poindexter (Wm.) and

young Carter both at home slightly wounded.

I left all at the Rectory quite well-darling

Lucy Page as sweet as ever.    Littleton Waller

is here & has a better situation than Clerk.  I

have as yet no clerk.  I have no more

paper & more letters to write.  Mr. Sydney Smith wrote

to me that Mr. Sweeney said our servts. were still in place

& contented. Dr. Wise says he has heard of the death of Old Mr. Pettitt

                                                           Farewell Yr  R.S.
