North of Forked Deer River
    Haywood Co. at T. W. Claybrookes
    April. 29. 1864

The colored man William [underscored], about 60 years old,
light copper color, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high,
and stout built, is permitted to go from Mr. T. W.
Claybrookes’s [name underscored], to the residence of Mrs. C. A. Stith [name underscored] in
Shelby County Tenn, on Big Creek, in the neigh-
borhood of Chamberlayne Jones, Parson Kerr,
Delta Post Office, and about 9 miles southwest
of Portersville, and to return again to Mr.
Claybrooke’s.  This permission is given for any
time in the months of June, July, August or
September.  This negro is vouched for by me as
honest, truthful and in every way faithful and
reliable ["in...reliable" is underscored], and any kindness to him will be
considered as a special favor to me.
