Dont be uneasy if you dont hear from us again soon, as the success of communication may be entirely cut off in a short time.

                                                                                    Winchester  June 10/61

Dear Charley

I reached here yesterday morning after a long & very tiresome journey.  I find them all at home looking & feeling very well, & in very good spirits.  This as you can well imagine was a great relief to me, as I had feared they were suffering much more inconvenience, than their letters represesented.  The school is going on as usual, although the constant passage of Southern troops through the town keeps up an excitement amongst the girls which is not favorable to study.  Grand Ma & Minnie Lloyd are still here, Uncle Fred

[2]

& Frank & their wives are in Warrenton I believe, & Uncle John still at Mt Ida.  All communication between Washington & Alexandria, & the rest of Va is entirely suspended.  Tell Uncle Richd that if he wishes to get the name of a Notary in Alexa & to take depositions there, a letter will reach there from Henry, but not from here.  No persons are allowed to pass through there, nor to go in or out toward the South.  It is the same case in Washington D C.  I am not able to see or hold any communication with Wade Edmund.  Tell Uncle R so I enclose this in an envelope addressed to Charles S See Esq, Martinsburg Berkeley Co Va, & shall request him to forward it by U. S. Mail from that point.  I am told the mail

[3]

is still carried by the U S to & from there.  This will probably continue but a short time, but still it will be well for you to write to me & enclose the letter in a 2nd envelope addressed the Chas S See Martinsburg (Martinsburg, Berkeley Co Va)  & ask him to forward it.  If any except business letters have come for me since my departure please forward them in the same way, and be sure to enclose U S stamps enough to enable Mr See to pay the C. S. postage at the rate of 5 cent on each.  When you write tell me all about Henry & business affairs.  They interest me very much, tell Uncle Richd to be sure to bring me in every dollar he can raise for me when he comes in.

[4]

Ma, Grandma & all the girls send a great deal of love to you & join me in saying that you must not believe a word of what you see about Southern affairs in the newspapers.  They totally misrepresent in every respect the condition & fortune of the South in this contest.  Dont allow yourself to be depressed & out of spirits, no matter what you hear, for I assure you there neither is, nor will be, any occasion for you to be so.  The people here speak of you & Harry in the kindest manner, they fully appreciate your position & hope you will be able to extricate yourselves soon.  Give my love to Harry & Bert & Dr Baker & to all of Uncle R’s & last but by no means least to Miss Blakeslea if by any accident she should still be in Henry.  If you write at once & direct as instructed above, I may get the letter.  Very affy your brother

Lloyd Powell
