            My dear Miss Hattie


                                                                        To my great displeasure I found upon returning to Hd. Qrs., that I had been turned over, by the Genl, to Major Whiting for this afternoon, to accompany him on duty & that it is absolutely essential (they think) that I should be along.  The pleasant afternoon therefore, that I had in anticipation, has vanished like smoke, & a long disagreeable ride has been substituted therefore.  Hoping to be more successful next time, I am
