Hd Qrs Lee's House
May 2d 1862

General,
Your 2d dispatch of to-day just received. If
the Gloucester point battery can keep back the gun
boats all day to-Morrow, then Logan surely has time
to reach West Point or the White House.
You will receive with this the order given
for the movement to-Night. You ought not to com
-mand your own rear guard. Remain until you
are satisfied with [struck-through] that your instructions are well un-
derstood and will be carried out. It will not do for
you to be too [underscored] far behind Longstreet.
It would be well to continue the fire some
time after Midnight, but then after the Pickets
on your right are decidedly gone, there is none sick
in your remaining- or any of your people.
I don’t hold you down to Minutes, in this order. The
aspect of affairs at the time might justify the
prolonging the time a little.
                                Yours truly,
I would like to have the vessels sunk.                        J.E. Johnston
                            General
