Dearest Nina

I received your very sweet and interesting note yesterday and I can assure you that it was a most delightful surprise.  Ellie and I have both been intending to write to you for the last month, but we did not carry out our intention.  I have been so anxious to see you and your family, dear Nina.  I received a letter from Kate Green a few weeks since.  She spoke so affectionately of you all.  she has been serving a great deal for the soldiers she says.  I have not seen Bob since he went to Manassas but however we hear from him frequently.  He was in the Fight and sent Buck a pistol or two as trophies. a bowie knife and also a Yankee puppy named Sunday, which is the pride of Buck's life.  The poor boy seems quite lost since Bob joined the army.  Bob got sick of the militia and joined

Stewart's Cavalry two or three weeks before the army went to Manassas.  The Yankees were over into Shepherdstown a few nights ago and took eight men.  I do not know who had your album last Dear Nina but I am going to write to Kate Green soon and then I will ask her about it.

My Darling Nina when I heard of your great and terrible affliction I felt almost as much sorrow as if he had been my own Brother and you my own Sister.  He was always so kind, thoughtful and unselfish.  Always thinking of the comfort of others and never of his own.  I do feel deeply for you my Darling Friend but I know that it must be a great comfort to you to know that he died a Christian and in a glorious cause.  I spent a great part of the summer in Clark at Col Larue's and enjoyed myself as much as could be expected.  Nina I am afraid you will have much difficulty in reading this miserable scrawl

but am writing at night.  Please be careful not to let any person see this.  I am going to try very hard to get up this winter to see you.  Betty talks of going to Warren soon.  Cousin Dan has come home if you know that he had been in Western Va with Gen Wise.  Cousin Willie is better he intends starting for Florida in a few days.  When you write to your Father give my love to him.  I saw Betty yesterday she sent a great deal of love to you.  We got a nice long letter from Bob yesterday.  He writes in fine spirits and says he is fixed pretty comfortably having a fire in his tent.  I am afraid I will not get to see him before spring.  Nina please direct your future letters to Shepherdstown for then we will get them sooner.  Give my best love to your Mother and Sister.  I am glad to hear that you like the new boarder.  I will try to get up to see you if I can but you must let me stay with you so as to be out of the sight of strange girls.  Be sure
