                Atlanta Aug. 9th ’74

Gen J.E. Johnston
    Dear Genl.        Immediately
after the receipt of your commu-
-nication, containing letters from
Gen. Hampton, showing that Gen.
Lee had disapproved your remo-
-val from command of the Army of the
West, I addressed it to “Gen A.
H. Colquitt, [First?] Georgia Branch
S. Hist. Co.”? both on the inside
and outside and called in per-
-son twice to present it. Failing
to find him, I left it with his
Secty. with a note [directing?] Gen
Colquitt to inform me what
action he could take on it.
I wrote to you some weeks ago
stating that Gen. C. had not com-
-municated with me, & that
I presumed he had written to
you.        Your letter of the 7th con-
tains the first information that
apparently, you had not been

informed of what action, if any,
Gen. Colquitt had taken in the
matter.        Within five min-
-utes after reading your letter
of the 7th I called upon him. He
had not been at home for several
days, but will certainly be at
home on Monday next (10th) I
will then present your demand
& inform you of the result.
    You will readily understand
that my reasonable surmise
that Gen. Colquitt preferred con-
-ferring with you instead of an in-
-termediary, precluded me from
further obtruding upon his atten-
-tion.    With the instructions
contained in your letter of yester-
-day, you may be assured of an
                from him
answer ^ of some sort verbally or by
letter.     Yrs very faithfully,
            W.S.Walker
