when he & MrLanghorne went uptown.  He to buy leather for the Government, between 11 & 12 got a Telegram from Waller


Cornahare, saying that he & Page, would be up probably tomorrow morning.  Between 12 & 1, Catherine Speed & Mary Waller


came in & went after 1, now 25 M after 1, shall walk some & talk till Dinner.  After Dinner, sat in the Dining room


with Mercer till after 4.  The darkest weather I ever saw & has been raining some before Dinner, shall walk as much as I am


able & converse before supper.  After Supper in the Dining Room, very unwell, took some R of Rhubarb, & sat & talked with


Mercer, Mr Langhorne with us till 7.  Mercer sat till ½ after 9, & we went to bed.  Had got to sleep a very short time,


when I was awoke, by a Telegram at 25 M before 11, from Dr Morris, saying that Page would not come but Waller would


& he got here at 4 AM.  I slept only between 2 & 3 hours, & in much pain.  Rained all night.


Sunday Decr 28th Waller Cosahan came from Richmond


Dressed at 20 M after 6, later on account of being so disturbed & sick.  Clear, & warm after raining all night.  After Breakfast


in my room very, very sick.  Mercer, Waller Cosnahan, & Mr Langhorne came in, & other members of the family.  All staid


till near Church time, & went except Mercer, I trying to read but as sick, dozed till near 1.  The family coming from Church


now 10 M after 1.  Much cooler & day bright.  Shall try , ^and read Mercer still in here with the Baby.  Shall recline in the easy chair


& doze till Dinner.  After Dinner, in my room reclining in the Easy Chair.  Mercer & Waller Cosnahan came in with the Baby & then


Katy, & sat till 10 M after 4, & went out when I had the fourth large evacuation, which weakens me to death’s door, now 25 M after


4, shall sit & if able before Supper, walk some.  Mercer & Mr L now in here.  After Supper, in my room in Easy Chair, Mercer,


Berta, & Waller Cosnahan came in together with Mary C. & the boys, they sat till after 7 & went upstairs, & Waller & Berta


till after 8.  Mercer sat with me, Katy, & Mr L who went out, ^Mercer the last at 20 M after 9. Took leave of me to go in


the morning to Richmond on his duty, never more to see me, I sincerely believe, from my present illness & bad feelings


I went to bed, slept 5 or 6 hours, very uneasily.  Forgot to say, Mr Speed came in after 4 & sat till near night.

Monday Decr 29th, Mercer goes to Richmond, & Waller C


Dressed at 18 M after 6.  Poor Mercer got his Breakfast, & started in my carriage for the Orange Cars at ¼ after


5.  Clear & warm morning, & I, weak & sick unto death.  After Breakfast, sick with Diarrhea, & weakened to death, unable


to read for a cold in the head that affects my eyes so.  Dozing till 12, Waller Cosnahan Johnny Mercer & Bobby came in & sat till near 1, when


Katy came in with the Baby, & now in here at 1.  Shall sit with her & walk some before dinner.  Page’s Milly came in to see


me as they were going to Dinner.  After Dinner, sitting by myself, too unwell to do anything, Mr Langhorne came in


& soon after him Waller C who started for the Southside Cars for Richmond ^at 4̭.  Shall for want of ability, do nothing, but


will try & walk some before supper.  Now 10 M after 4.  After Supper Mr L & the different Members of the family coming


in & soon going out till about 8, Corbin Mercer came in & sat, & soon after Royall Rudd.  They sat & talked till 9, & went


I sat with Berta & Mr L who had come in before the others went, till 25 M before 10, went to bed & did not get to


sleep for some time, but at last slept well 5 or 6 hours.


Tuesday Decr 30th.  Expected Dr Morris this morning from Pamplin’s, has ̭^not come yet


Dressed at ¼ after 6. Cloudy& warm.  Curious weather for the season.  After Breakfast, sick & weak trying to read


but my eyes too much affected till about 10.  Dr Morris came to my room.  He came by the Cars before day.  He sat till near-


=ly 12, & went out to see Mr Langhorne, & may return to dinner.  Dr Langhorne came directly ̭^after he went out, & sat some time, &


after he went, I read till 20 M after 1, very dark & cloudy & has rained some.  Katy, Baby, & Berta in here now.  Shall talk


& try to walk some till Dinner.  After Dinner, ̭^Doctor Morris did not come to Dinner is here with Mr L.  Doctor Mercer came in about 11, & sat till now 20 M after 4, & gone.


As dark as night & raining.  Shall walk some & talk till Supper.  After Supper, Mr Langhorne with me


till about 8, Katy & Berta came in & we all sat till 20 M before 10, & to bed.  I slept 5 or 6 hours. High NW wind about 3 & [illeg]


Wednesday Decr 31st
Dressed 27 M before 7.  Clear, windy, & colder, after the rain of yesterday.  After Breakfast in my room reading till 11.  Then

went into the Dining room, & walked about till ½ after 11.  Came back, & read & dozed some till after 12, the Baby was brought in


& I played some with her, & Katy came in, & I read again till now 25 M after 1.  Day now dark, cloudy, cold, & windy.


Shall walk again & talk till dinner.  After, Dinner, by myself, Miss Betty Blackford came in, & not long after her


Mary Mercer & Loula, & after them, Molly Langhorne, Berta, & the rest of the family with Mr L.  They all


sat & went out near Dark, & I walked till near Supper.  After supper, by myself till 8, Molly Langhorne


who staid with Berta all night, & Berta came in & sat till ¼ before 10, & went upstairs, & I to bed.  Slept 5 hours -


Thursday, January 1st 1863. New year got a letter from Page


Dressed ¼ after 6, of the New year, after 1862, the most disastrous & miserable one that ever passed over


my head, & of all from my section of the Country.  What this is to bring remains to be seen, but hope


is still alive, tho very feeble.  Clear cold & promising good weather.  After Breakfast, sitting reading till near


12 when Dr Langhorne came in & sat & talked some very agreeably.  The Baby came in as he went, & Katy, Mr Boyd, my


Landlord, came to see about his lot, & I sent for him & he came in & relieved me by his kindness, as I could not move when


the year ended.  He sat & went at ½ after 1.  I shall now walk & talk till Dinner.  Got a letter this morning from Page in-


=viting me to come to Richmond, but I am physically unable.  After Dinner, Mr L in here for a short time, I doing very


little.  He says there is an extra Republican out speaking of a Victory of our Troops in Tennessee.  I have sent for


one, now 20 M after 4, shall walk & talk till supper.  Did not get an Extra.  After Supper, sat with Katy, Mr L going


to his mother’s.  Sat till 25 M before 10, went to bed, & slept 6 hours.  Took a Blue Pill before night.


Friday Jany 2nd 1863 Wrote to Page Mr Langhorne goes to Richmond


Dressed about 6.  Clear cool morning.  Feel horribly, have not had an evacuation since my Diarrhea of


Monday last.  A very small one just ^took another Pill now.  After Breakfast, had another small one, reading the paper till after 10, then


wrote a long letter to Page in Richmond.  Finished it about 12.  Then rested & played with Baby who was brought in

& not long gone out, now ¼ after 1.  Shall walk some & read a little till Dinner.  After Dinner, in my


room.  Mr Langhorne came in & to my surprise told me he had to go to Richmond to get off another enrollment, as he had fur-


=nished a Substitute, who is now on duty, there is some difficulty with the enrolling officer & he thinks it best to go to


the War Department for permanent  settlement.  He starts at ½ after 4.  Now 4.  I shall do nothing more but may walk


some till Supper & talk if I have anyone to talk to.  After Supper, went into Katy’s room to be with her & Baby, & sat


till ¼ after 8, & went to my room, where Katy soon came & sat till ¼ before 9, & went to her room to Mr Ned & George


Langhorne.  At ¼ after 9 Mr George L. came to my room, & sat & talked till 5 M before 10.  Went to bed, slept 5 hours or more


Saturday, Jany 3d. Mules came from Dr Morris’s farm


Dressed a few M after 6.  Moderate morning & clear.  No evacuation, obstinate constipation.  Had an Evacuation before


breakfast that has relieved me much.  After Breakfast, reading till 10, had sent for George Langhorne & he came


I then wrote & gave him a check for $50, for myself, & to pay for salt distributed by the Government, & he went out


to attend to it. I then read till 12, when Mary Cos. brought in the Baby, & I played with her, & read till now 10 M


after 1.  Shall now walk & talk till Dinner.  After Dinner, had another large evacuation,  now 10 M before 4, nothing


to do & nothing to read, shall walk about & talk to anyone I may chance to see till Suppertime.  Mr Langhorne not


come with the money or salt.  After dinner, About 4, Mary Mercer, Katy, Leila Tucker came in & sat till near dark, & went


went.  George Langhorne had come in before they went, & brought the $50, but got no salt on account of the crowd, he went


at dark, & I then walked till near Supper.  After Supper, Mr Wm Blackford came in & sat till ¼ after 8, & went, & soon


after Corbin Mercer who sat till 20 M before 10, & went with Rudd, who was with Berta in the Dining room. I then


went to bed, & slept 5 or 6 hours.  Booker Dr Morris’s man brought up in the Afternoon, my mules to be sold.


Sunday, Jany 4th.


Dressed 20 M after 6. Warm & cloudy.  After Breakfast, sitting entirely alone, read the papers & the Bible, & dozed & read

again till 1, all the household out at Church, suppose they will be in presently.  Cloudy & gloomy, I shall walk if able till dinner


& talk if any body comes where I am.  After Dinner reading till 10 M after 4, shall walk for exercise, & now & then into


Katy’s room till supper.  Weather warm & windy with flying Clouds.  Had walked into Katy’s room, where I found


Miss Molly Langhorne, when Mr Speed soon came in, & we went into my room, & he sat with me, & went at dark.


I then walked before supper.  After Supper, went to Katy’s room & sat till near 8, & went to my room to get rid of


the disagreeable groans of Martha Tabb sick in Basement under that room. Sat, Katy in & here, till 9, when


Dr Langhorne came in to visit Old Rose & Martha & went 20 M after 9 I went, Joe with him, for Physick, Kate


came back & sat till 20 M before 10, & I went to bed & slept near 6 hours.


Monday Jany 5th Old Rose died.


Dressed 4 M after 6.  Clear, moderate morning  Mr Langhorne not come from Richmond. After Breakfast, very


unwell, in pain in the face & side of the head, reading as well as able till just before 11. Dr Langhorne came in to


visit Negroes & soon went. A little after 11. Bobby Mercer came in & sat till 12. After he went, read, & played some


with Baby till 5 M after 1. Shall try & walk some, & read till Dinner.  Katy just come in. After Dinner, reading


a little having nothing worth reading till now ¼ after 4. Dr Langhorne just come in ̭^to see Negroes shall walk after he goes, & talk


till supper, & be sometimes in Katy’s room. Walking, went into Katy’s room where I found Old Mrs Langhorne & Miss


Nannie. Sat with them till they went near dark, with George, who had come in.  After they went, I walked till near Supper


after Supper, went into Katy’s room, & sat till 25 M before 9, driven out by the noise of Martha Tabb.  While in there at ¼


before 8, Old Rose died, & at 10 M before 9 heard that Martha Tabb had a child in the same room, which lived an hour


or 2.  I sat till ¼ before 10, went to bed & slept about 6 hours. Dr L went after I went to bed.


Tuesday, [illeg] Janry 6th, Mr Langhorne from Richmond


Dressed ¼ after 6.  Clear & temperate Morning, Mr L. came by the Cars this morning. After Breakfast, after clear

morning it clouded up and commenced raining. I sick, & depressed by the weather & sad scenes of death & sickness in the town


read the papers & at between 10 & 11, Mr L. came in looking badly from his travel all night. He brings the melancholy account of


hopeless illness of Poor Walker rest in Richmond of Scarlet Fever contracted by nursing General Whiting, his brother George


Langhorne came in soon after him, & sat till near 12. After they went, Dr Langhorne came & sat till between 12 & 1. The Baby


also in here. I read till 20 M. after 1. As dark a day as I ever saw too dark to see the lines on the paper & raining all day. I paid George


Langhorne for the salt furnished by the Government yesterday. Shall walk, read & talk till dinner. After Dinner ^not raining but clear̭ doing nothing & nothing


to read. Katy & the Baby in here, now 20 M after 4. Shall walk presently & talk till Supper. Walked about, & went into Katy’s room before


Supper & took tea in there, & then sat till 9 with her, Mr Langhorne & after 8, with Berta who had been out till after 8. Went


to my room at 9 & sat by myself till ½ after 9. Went to bed & slept for 7 ½ hours. Cold night.


Wednesday, January 7th Negroes came from Dr Morris's


Dressed at 5 M after 6. Cold morning & clear. Had 3 evacuations this morning. After Breakfast reading the papers till between


10 & 11, when Dr Langhorne came in to see Old Areana & Martha Tabb; He seems to be despairing of both, Katy & the Baby in here soon


after 11. I read till ¼ after 1, & shall walk some, talk some & read till Dinner. Bright cold day. After Dinner, Mary Mercer came


in & sat till Sundown & went. While she was here Colo Maurice Langhorne in before Sundown, & sat till nearly dark


& went & I walked till near Supper. After Supper, Mr Langhorne sat with me, generally, till 20 M before 10. Went to


bed & was prevented from sleeping well by a Cough, like Pneumonia, after 1 Oclock. Slept 4 or 5 hours. Understand this morning


that Amanda, Catherine, Rose, Mulattoe, & Amanda’s Children came up at 11 in Freight  Train from Dr Morris’ farm.


Thursday Jany 8th. Mr Saunders here.


Dressed at 20 M after 6. Cold hazy morning & cloudy. The Negroes that came this morning came up to see me sorry


to see that some of them are not clothed & without shoes. After Breakfast, sick & in much trouble as it appears that


I cannot get possession of the house I rented for the rescent year. What I am to do I cannot tell in my helpless

situation. Read as well as I could & dozed some till about 11, when Doctor Langhorne came in to see the sick ̭^negroes & vaccinate


those that have last come up. Catherine Speed came in while he was here. He went about 12, & Catherine sat till ½ after.


I then read till 20 M before 2. Berta in here now. Shall walk some before dinner, & read or talk some. After Dinner, about


or a little after 4, surprised by being told that Mr Saunders, Refugee &c, was in the Dining room & had called to see me,


He came to my room, & looked amazingly like old times, when we were all in Wmsburg, & happy. He sat till dark, & was


very interesting, walked some after he went & went into Katy’s room & then in my own before Supper. After Supper, Berta


& Mary in my room & after them Katy, & for a short time Mr Langhorne who came home near 9, & went out at 9. Sat with Berta


& Mary till 20 M before 10. Went to bed & had a good night. Slept 7 hours. Snowed in the night.


Friday January 9th


Dressed at 6.  Told that it is snowing & uncertain whether I shall have a house to put my head in. Ground &


Housetops covered with snow. After Breakfast, reading the papers, different members of the family coming in, Berta


among the last, till between 12 & 1, Dr Langhorne came in & sat till 10 M before 1. Day now clear & more moderate. Snow gone.


shall walk & talk till Dinner & go some into Katy’s room. Now 10 M after 1. After Dinner, reading till ¼ after 4. Shall walk some


go to Katy’s room ̭^now and then & talk till Supper. Fine Afternoon & milder. After Supper, sat by myself till Katy came in after 8. Had


an alarm of fire soon after. Sat till 20 M before 10, Berta’s company just going out from Dining room. Slept about 6 hours.


Saturday, Jany 10th. Wrote to Mercer.


Dressed 20 M after 6. Cloudy. Still uncertain about a house. Commenced to snow before breakfast.  After Breakfast, snowing


I read the paper till about 10 ^or after, then commenced a letter to Mercer, & Robert in here, Dr Langhorne came in about 12, after I


had finished the letter, & sat till ½ after, & went into Mr Langhorne’s room who is sick, I there read till now 5 M after 1. Cloudy


dark & misting after hailing some.  Shall walk & go into Mr Langhorne’s room & walk & read till dinner. Ground covered with


Snow. After dinner, sitting in my room in melancholy mood, Dr Mercer came in, & sat & talked till Sundown &

Dressed at 2 M after 6, said to be clear & not so cold. Still without a house to move in: After Breakfast


in my room reading Berta came in & Mary. Mary soon went out, & Berta sat, & at 11, read the morning Service, & finished


before 12, & the Baby was brought in, & at ¼ after 1. Corbin Mercer came in & sat till now ½ after 1. After he goes I shall


walk about & go into Katy’s room & see Mr L. who is still confined. Sun out after a cloudy morning. After Dinner, doing


little & reading a little till 20 M. before 4, shall go into Mr Langhorne’s room & sit some, & then walk about, & talk till


supper ^Mr Tom & George L came in a short time. After Supper, went into Katy’s room & sat with Mr Langhorne, Katy asleep on the bed, till 20 M. before 9. Went


into my room & sat by myself till ½ after 9, went to bed & slept 6 ½ hours.


Monday Jany 12th


Dressed 10 M. after 6. Clear morning & moderate. After Breakfast, Mr Langhorne came to my room for a short time &


then Berta & Mary C: & sat & I read, & talked to them till near 1. About 12, the Baby was carried to Old Mrs Langhorne’s


& Katy followed her between 12 & 1, to dine & spend the day. Now 5 M after 1. Shall walk some & talk with the girls till


Dinner, & would read some if I had anything to read. After Dinner, entirely alone reading till 20 M after 4 shall


walk till supper. Katy nor Baby yet come. Dr L: in for a short time. Mr Langhorne came in before Supper & went [illeg]


at Supper time to his Mother’s as Katy & the Baby were to stay the night. After Supper Berta & Mary in my room till


½ after 9. They had been, as usual, through the Streets all the afternoon. I went to bed & slept poorly little more than 5 hours.


Tuesday Jany 13th Letter from Mercer
