Dear Susan
I received your last
letter a few days ago and answered
your questions satisfactorily. I am sorry
to hear that Mr Bowie is making such
headway over the way I am somewhat
[afraid?]. I shall have to steer my bark
towards the shore of [?] again
I think the second trial might be
met with more success than the first
probably and if you dont let
me know all the the particulars by
the next opportunity I shall at once
proceed to business
I have since my last letter been appoin
ted Seargeant Major for the 35th Va Reg
So both of us now are clear out of Co F
I am glad of it. You need not show
this to anyone but the Col paid me
quite a complement by not signing my ex
change for the Cavalry after it had
been approved by all the [Cav ly?] officers &
[Genl?] R E Lee ^ [?] col said he had something better for me. I would like very much to have a coat & pants [mint?] and [?]
but, my love to all at home. I am as
