408 West 20th Street
Washington City, Dec 30, 1867

Mr. President:

I have just received a letter
from Mr. Robert Tyler, dated "Montgomery Dec 24/67,"
containing this paragraph -

I send you a pretty strong
article. We are now beginning to stand as a Unit,
the white people proper. We do not think there
can be more than 2500 white men in the state who
are with the Negroes. A fair election will show this. I am
glad to hear there is a chance for the removal of
Pope & Swayne. The first is a fool and a bit of a
rascal too. The last is a miserable fanatic. From
all that I can see & hear I believe the Democrats, if
united north, can succeed in the Presidential contest.
The election of Grant by the Republicans will be fatal
to the country & the first step to Empire & permanent despotic Rule in America.
I personally prefer A Johnson and he would be
the first choice of the Southern States had they an
independent position."

"This is Christmas and we have
a dreadful state of affairs upon us here. There
is no one happy, either white, or Black. Every body
is ruined."

You will, Mr. President, find enclosed the article he
sends, and I trust, your ______? may
_____ you to read it.

With highest respect
Your O___ ____
John Tyler Jr.

To His Excellency
Andrew Johnson
