March 29th 1862 Camp No. 20

My Dear Father

Your letter just now reached
me and I feel very glad to hear
from you again I am very well
at the present time and I hope
that these few lines will find you
enjoying the same state of good
health We have plenty of news here
about the war but I suppose that
you get them pretty near as soon
as we do nly what takes place
here with us on the 27 the we heard
a tremendious firing both cannons
and musketry and yesterday we
got the result this fight took
place with Genl Porters division
and the black leged Rebels at
the Chickahomany creek about 4

[Pg2]

Mills from Richmond it was a very
hard battle our men made three
heavy charges on them killing a great
number but I do not know how many
but our men did not care about taking
any prisoners the second Maine Regt
would cheer for bull run and
killing all they could they took
one whole Brigade of Rebels and
                                  ers
near abouts as many wounded as prison
this was worth that Bull Run fight
at any time last saturday the 21
                                h
Mishigan boys had a small skirmis
with one whole Brigade of Rebels they
killed and[crossed out] fifty and took fifty
prisoners I saw some of the prisoners
and also some wounded they suffered
very much but our boys being to
weak had to fall back with one
killed and 9 wounded this little fight
was very much prized I would like
to see more exchanged in that way
ten for one hundred at this big

[Pg3]

fight we can not learn how many we
lost but not very many some of the
Rebel prisoners said if we would take
Richmond which we could easy do
why we would have every thing that
belongs to the Rebels their amunition
and every thing else we are only 7 mile
from Richmond now and we have orde[rs]
to be ready to march at a moments notice
with three days rations and sixty rounds
of cartridges 20 rounds more than we
ever had before so I think that we
will have some fighting before long
I [very?] sorry to hear that Henry Gross
can not make one story of what he
says I am thinking that the origonal
one can not make one story himself
unless he sees that ether that he wrote
he is now in the hospital himself
and he also wrote that Brother
Frank was in the guard house [there?]
is not so by no means I think he
has more to do with others than
himself

[Pg4]

I have heard nothing from Frank
yet and I do not know how he is
or where he is any more than that
he was sent to the General hospital
I would like to know whether you
got my money or not and if you
did how much you got I want
you to let me know by the next
letter you write to me this is all
for this time but I do not want
you to forget your son
