in sight but could not
find out where our regiment
were and were ordered to
stop for fear that we might
mistake the enemy for frien

remained idle spectators the
balance of the time. About
dust the fireing ceased &
our troops retreated. One
of our boys were killed early
in the action Joseph M Wells

Climents are missing.
Lieut Witcher and Clements
were known to be wounded.
We fell back a few miles that
night. Early the next morning
we commenced the retreat.
The enemy refused us the pr
iilige of burying our dead.
They fired on the flag of truce
which were sent in for that
purpose. They followed us in
hot pursuit to Strasburg
but were held in check
by Colonel Ashbys cavalry
and some pieces of artillery
left behind for that purpere.
The loss of our regiment
is very heavy for the numbers
