Thursday 15  Wind NE. Rained nearly all day. Began to plough.
& weed corn in mg but soon had to stop. Three Yankee
Soldiers, evidently deserters (tho they said not.) came over
             here in the
m.g. from Guinea on their way to the Rappahannock. They behaved
Themselves very well & indeed were making apologies for coming
             to the
South as Soldiers, said they were tired of it & that they were
             cheated into
enlisting by the "Big Men"s speeches, about the Flag & the
             Union etc. which they
have since found to be all humbug. They crossed Ware River at
             Selden's
Friday 16   Wind E. Clear after the mg. Replanting Corn, Taking
1st furrows with two Ploughs - Maria & the children spent the

Saturday 17 Wind SE. Clear, Weeding Corn, Taking dirt with three ploughs,
I started to go to the CH. & had Richard & Charley with me, but
            when I got
near White Marsh I was arrested by a detachment of Yankee
            Cavalry and
and carried to that place, It seems that they wished to arrest
            Dr [Prosser?]
Tabb & took me for him - I was soon discharged & again started
            for
the C.H. but was met & turned back by Mr Curtis who had heard
            that
the Yankees had gone to my house, which was a mistake
Norfolk has been evacuated & the Virginia blown up
