we could hear the canon at
Manassas very distinctly.
This was the second days march
from Stanton. The next morning
it was raining. This was Monday.
One of our company William
W Wallace was taken sick with
the measles and was sent
back to Stanton. We marched
all day that day through the
rain and mud a distance of
15 miles to a place called
McDowels and lay that night
on the wet ground. In that
days march we met several
hundred Confederate prisoners
who were taken in the Vick
mountain fight and

released on parole of honour
from Camp McDowel. We started
on the morning of the 23rd of
June and arrived at monte
ry that evening early. In the
evening here I met with sever
al of my acquaintance in the
Companys of L. M. Shoemaker
from Danville and Capt
flournoy from Pittsylvania
Court House. I saw Sterling Cooper
William C Austin and sever
al other of my acquaintance.
From Montery we started for
Huntersville on the morning
of the 26th of June 1861
and arrived at that place
on the 26th of June 1861
