I was taken sick. I was out
on several scouting expeditions
out on mingo flat and beyon
d there. On one of these exp
editions about the middle
of August I suffered more
with cold than I ever did
One night in my life. On
another expedition one of
our Company James I Lap[illegible]d
shot off one of his fore fingers
accidentally with his own
gun. I was taken down with
the typhoid fever about the
last of August and carried
to the hospital by four 
men on a blanket and

laid in the hospital there
about a week. From there
they put me in a wagon
and hauled me down to
the dry branch hospital
and I stayed there about two
weeks. From there I was hauled
back to Huntersville a distance
of 30 miles in an old four horse
wagon over one of the roughest
roads i the northwest when
I was so weak that I had
to lie just as they laid
me. We staid at hunters
ville a bout a week. one
of our company died at
this place. James. C. Reynolds 
and was burreed there. He died
the 29th of Sept .. 1861.
