My dear friend
Owing to the many necessitudes in this
continued warfare, I’m induced to ad
dress you relative to our expenditures
for house rent, hire of cook & purchase
of provisions &c &c, during our stay at
the delectable spot [?] [?].
All that is necessary for me ^or you^ to know
The amount of money paid out by you
for provisions, the date commencing to
pay for Rent of house & ^hiring of^ Cook.
The rent & hire are the following to wit ["to wit" underlined]
the house at $40, & the cook $20, per
month. We only pay for the house
to the 11th July Last – when we were
ordered to this place. I will enclose

to you in this epistle, the amt paid
out by me for provisions after our
agreement to keep together & your family
came down. Forty ($40.70) dollars & seventy
cents is the amt grat. thus this paid out
by me. The rent of house & hire of cook
I am wholly responsible. With these
statements Captain I beg you to make
the settlement & oblige.

The General has gone to the country
quite sick I am sorry to inform you
I hope though his state of illness will
not be long & tedious. It is feared by
his attendant physicians that it will
