B.22. equal disadvantage in climates very different from their own it is Evident that the Northern Conquests are not to be accounted for by the particular temperature their Countrys enjoy; we must therefore have recourse to moral causes to explain this fenomenon, from them we shall learn that if the North has produc'd the last race of Conquerors it proceeded from their situation addition free fierce & savage as the Southern people once were, they possess'd more courage & a more daring Warlike Spirit than people nourish'd in Luxury & effeminacy, enervated by Despotism, as the Romans were under the last Emperors, who fell by the same manly Virtues that enabl'd them to triumph over the World, it was owing to this same Luxury & Sloth of the Asiatics that gave the Romans
