                                Richmond  Tuesday 7 March  1865

I wrote ot you my dearest wife the second day

after I reached here & hoped that by this time I

should have heard from you, but there was no letter for

me.        I have been greatly disappointed in not

seeing Bob: his division expected  for several days

to be ordered to Gordonsville & I suppose that was

the reason why he has not come in;  I have sent

him one or two messages & I learn that he is very

well.   I saw Maj.  Baker Lee of his regt. just now

who said that Bob was well & that Pickett's Divn.

was to have been reviewed by Gen. Lee at 9, oclock

today; moreover that the division has been ordered

back to its quarters;  from this I hope that I may

get to see our boy;  Maj. Lee left camp to recruit  his

health.    The weather except for two days, has been

just as bad as it could hopefully be in Pittsyl-

-vania;  so that I have seen none of our female

friends.  I called just now at Dr. Hoge's merely to

send a message in to Lizzie Ewell to know if

she would be at  home at 12 oclock- and as she said

she would, I hope to see her presently.   Col. Ewell

has been to see me.   I somehow heard that Miss Mary

[P. 2]

Whittle had come here & gone away again to see her

uncle Powhatan.  I believe her friend Mrs. Jones is not

at home.   There  is not a particle of news.

I write now chiefly to say that I expect to leave

here on Friday, so as to be with you on Saturday;  but

you must not be disappointed if you don't see me on

that day, as travelling is very uncertain.  I stay

at least a day longer than I intended, in order to

increase the chances of seeing Bob.     I should have

gone out to see him but that I knew that there was

but small chance of my being able to see him as

his regiment was under arms & expecting to be ordered

away; now however  that it is not expected to march

I hope strongly to see him.   Best love ot dear

Page & all at Mr. Wilmer's    Farewell my dearest

wife.        Ever your  R.S.
