As the danger draws nearer in

am not so alarmed.  At five

o clock this morning I heard the

sound of our first cannonading

The reports were in rapid

succession.  Skirmishing has

been going on all day about

5 or 6 miles from town.  We

cant tell the result.  The nearer

you are to a fight the harder

to see exactly what is going

and to hear the result.  The reports

are various – One that we had

taken the enemy's battery another

that they had driven us

from our positions - ___  ___

fight.  It is nothing more than

a skirmish.  We can not tell when

the big fight may come off.  The

people here do not seem much

ago a great many ladies hair

left down – the _____ are not  __

____ to do so I am told – You need

not be afraid that I will not flee

if the Govt does – if it dont I shall

not feel much uneasiness.  I expe

rience at present much less than

under the same circumstances last

summer in Winchester when I had so

much exposed.  If the Yankees should

get me they would find me a hard

bargain if I can only keep my appe

office a few days ago.  He is a hand-
