Darling daughter
Hurrah!  Hurrah! Hur
ah! for the news to day!  Jackson
surprised the enemy at Front
Royal captured two entire Regi
ments.  1st Maryland & a Vermont
Cavy. Regt. with famous fine horses
he then pressed them on toward
Winchester,  there fought Banks,
and whipped him, drove their routed
army through Winchester took 2000 men
prisoner there, all their Commissary’s
stores & was in hot pursuit of them
towards Maryland.  The enemy tried
to fire the town, but were so close
ly pursued they had not time.
Our loss in killed & wounded is
put at 100.  Capt. Theets (?) our excel
lent officer of Ashby’s comm
and is said to be killed.  Cousin
Ran & Ed Lidball (?) passed through the
office & gave me a hearty shaking of
the hand telling me they supposed
I would be back soon at my old
home.  The town has been much excited
by the news, which I suppose is
substantially true.  The firing
of cannon which I reported to you in
the neighborhood of town, turned out to
be a skirmish only in which we
lost 19 & they 61 killed.  The enemy
has possession of a portion of the
Central Rail Road - & the Cars
now come into that road by taking
the Fredericksburg Road to the Junc
-tion.  The enemy has a position abt
five miles from the town – when
the fight will come off we of course
cant tell.  This victory of Jacksons
may have an unfortunate ef
fect upon the condition of things
here.  No doubt it has damaged
McClellan’s calculations & if
he presses on towards Washington
it will create a [?] there
which will summon a portion
at least of the army here to [?]
[?] - If you have any letters
or shall get any letters from your
Mother send it to me.  Her last letter
said she was not well & it has been
so long since I heard from her
that I feel uneasy –
Yr ever aff father
