                        My Dear Nina

I have been owing you a letter for a long time  I believe though I am not quite sure that it is not you that owe me.  However as this is my birthday and as Sister Bec; says in her letter the first time that my birthday has come on Easter since the year that I was born and therefore you see my first real birthday I cannot let it pass without letting you all hear from me.  Thank Sister Bec for her letter that I recd a day or two ago, and tell her that

Brother Lloyd says that he would have written to her long ago, but that his eyes have not permitted him to write atall, the only thing that he can do now is to hunt ducks.  He cannot read more than a half an hour without having to rest them.  So you see I have all the writing home to do.  Since writing the above I have looked at the table in the  Prayer Book  and find that Easter comes on the 31st of March in 1850 so Sister Bec was mistaken and I am two years old instead of one.  Yesterday Ben got back from St. Louis with our stock of Spring Foods with which we will be very busy for three or four days marking and putting up.  I do not think that we will be very much troubled with customers while we are at work

as it is raining very hard now and has been all day.

I was at Uncle Richards about an hour ago they are all well  Miss Susan is up but not able to come down stairs yet  Min is still going to school at the College.  I see very little of Mary Baker though I think she is going to school there too.  Anna Haymaker is at Uncle Richard’s staying with Miss Susan.  I go to Uncle Richards about once a week.  Sometimes take dinner there on Sunday but not often about once in three months.  Brother Lloyd’s eyes are getting a great deal better now and in a week or two he seems to think that they will be perfectly well again.  He will start for home about the first of July.

I hope you will have a pleasant visit to Alexandria  I shall expect you to give me a full account of all your conquests & flirtations, and if you should call on “Honest Old Abe”? just remember me to him.  By the way he has cut Mr Janneys head off already and appointed Mr. Ad Warren in stead.  Much to the general dissatisfaction of our citizens.  Give my love to all at home and to my friends who should enquire about me  Min to me to give her love to you all so did Mrs Blakester.  Don’t forget to answer this soon.  I expect to write to Ma soon I suppose she will be in Alexandria when this reaches you  Do you see Strother Barton often?  Brother Lloyd send his love to all

Your affectionate Brother
