                Commandants Office
                Navy Yard, Gosport,
                  20th July 1861

My dear Annie,
Your letter of the 14th reached me this
morning, enclosing one from Clay, of a tenor similar
to mine, except that he said nothing about your Mother.
To this I replied, enclosing him a letter to Mr. Peyor
& some of my money to take him to Richmond.
In addition, I wrote Counsel Barron about him
asking for the Secretaryship  which I had in
perspective.
This I didn’t mention, for reasons which
add new luster Madam to the reputation
already established by Mr. Hope for amiability
& delicacy of feeling.  I shall try my
hard to help him, & it may happen that
I can serve your father & mother, for the
first I feel my –i-----? for the  loss so
little affection & respect.  My advice to them
this Clay was to Go to Glos’tr: & I hope they will
adopt it.  If I have been interrupted once
I have been twenty times since I began this,
& must content myself with a very meager

outline of what I should like to say.
First then, I have bought umbrella &
spats $1.50 ---? one & $1.00 for four fi--?
latter, which Aunt M. had handsewn for me.
In addition, I have committed the extra expence
of a suit of clothes cost $10.00, they will add
greatly to my comfort, & after a while I shall
get some shirts, about this price & you will
advise me.   The “mags”? & little Kabar Mr.
B. sent, the mags for little chicks & the other
for you & Mamma.  She is very kind &
you must thank her.
Your fears of an immediate attach here
are withered just grounded I think as the
defeat suffered at Manassas has been
very severe & they thin—(St. ---- just

To night I will write much that
I must leave unsaid just now,
But if I should sleep too long, or

I am trying my hardest to be a good
boy, & hope successfully.
I shall go to church tomorrow
with a heart full of trust &
confidence & you darling –
I suppose you can’t go out much do

I enclose my reply to your kisses offer &
