        May 2 1860-

My dearest [Father?]
    I was so truly grateful
by [] your last kind letter
to dear [] to see how deeply
& kindly you were interested in
my [] & heavy affliction the
[] made known to you, & how
promptly you had responded to
the sad news. Yes I have lost a
kind affection to husband, &
[] left with my [fire/fine] dear
[] (dearest Catherine being
married in Mexico) [making?]
the death. My dear husband
had been ailing much during
the past year, having had the
jaundice & slight attack of
[], which obliged him to
undergo an operation under chloroform
in the month of August, which was
successfully [], & he appeared
much better. We passed the Autumn
at [] in South Wales a very
pretty seabathing placem tho change
of air was of service to him. & we
remained there until the end
of November when we returned to
our house in London. Poor William
took cold, & unfortunately took a
cold bath at the time (but which he
had frequently done before) but this
time he was not strong enough
for re-action in the [] of the
blood consequently severe illness
followed with congestion of the lungs
which ended in a rapid decline
lingering just two months from the
time he was taken ill- This has been
a heavy [] upon us all &
made great changes in our []
as a fine business of at least 3000,
a year now []. Our income is
now about 1000, owing to the heavy
losses in the year 1854 though had
behaviour with pictures in the
Musium house, otherwise we should
have been very comfortably left as
it is. I have determined to give up
the large house in Cainbridge []
& either take a smaller one in town,
or live in the country entirely- for
the next five months, I have taken a
furnished house abot 10 miles from
London on the []. [] line, where we
are now residing, it is quiet & we have
a nice garden, I have let my house in
Cainbridge []. furnished for that []
about when I hope at the end of
the time Machester to get rid of the
lease altogether- as it requires a
large establishment to keep it up.
Dear Caley living at [] just
now has been a great comfort, as she
has been frequently with me the
distance between us being short. All
her family keep well, & she is looking
[] to herself. M. Deaker
still keeps [] [] his exercise
daily. His [] finds him past.
I am so glad to hear that you continue
to enjoy good health & all your family.
The 11th of this month you will have
completed another year. I wish you
[] happiness & comfort on the occasion.
I am thankful to say we all []
pretty well. I am not very [], but
no complaint. My dear girls are a
great comfort to me particularly at the
present moment. My eldest [] is
very industrious & [] [].
[] west to her [] in every ways
Susan, full of life & spirit [] animals
[] [], Ellen fond of [], Celay
the youngest & tallest of all [] heels
& [] & [] in [] ways. I am
so pleased to hear you have such comfort
on your [] George Bede being so very
steady & clean in business. Should he
visit England we shall pass to see him.
We have good accounts of dear Kate. She
has two little girls, & it is very happy being
in [], but our [] []
been much interrupted from the []
state of the country the past being stopped which is
at times a great [] to us. I hope you
will soon write to me, & let me know how you are
getting in- you seem to be pleased with your
present residence at Memphis. General []
was quite well when I heard from her. Ted
& Charlette [] [] husband are [] with
him just over with their family. Emily Simpson
is [] at [] with her children, he []
[]. [] is in India- the dear girls []
with me in [kindness?] [] to you, you []
hope & family, & believe me  my dearest father
    Your affection daughter
