            Near Greensboro NC
                     April 27, 1865
Gen Order
No. 18
By ^the terms of a Military
Convention made on the 22nd inst
by Maj Gen W. T. Sherman U.S.A, and
Gen J. E. Johnston C.S.A, the officers &
men of this Army are to bind themselves
not to take up arms against the U.S
until properly releived from that
obligation, & shall receive guaranties
from the U. S Officers against molestation
by the U.S authorities so long as they
observe that obligation & the laws
in force where they reside.
For these objects duplicate muster
rolls will be made out immediately
& after the distribution of the necessary
papers, the troops will be marched
under their officers to their respective
States, & there be disbanded, all retaining
[precious?] property.
The object of this convention is pacifi-
cation to the extent of the authority of the
Commanders who made it.
Events in Virginia which broke every
hope of success by war, impossed on its
General the duty of saving our country
from further devastation & our people
from ruin.
        J. E. Johnston
