                Philada. sept 7th. 1864
My dearly beloved Son
        I forwarded you recently
via Bermuda a letter in reply to yours through
Lady Cardley [inclosing the acc of the RF&PCo].
& now hand you is the same opportunity by
which you will receive this a duplicate of the
same,
I observe from the Richmond papers that
a dividend of seven per cent was lately declared
by the directors of the F &R RRCo. payableon acc?    & now
the reasons for it [given in one of your aunt let-
-ters in anticipation.]  They have much force ?
to  in view of the fact that whatever dividend
is paid in Virginia much also is paid to stockholders here
[strikethrough] in its funds, which may be hereaf-
-ter very essential to put the road & machinery
in order.  I would advise limiting? any further
dividend during the war were to be 3 ½ pr cent
only.
If you have not already drawn the
dividend at seven per cent lately declared & invest in stocks and bonds
in my name, I would recommend your not
doing so for the present, but letting it them  [ if you
can conveniently do so without the money] to the credit
of the stock & bonds.  I make this suggestion, both in view
of the present great depreciation of confederate
Money & for other reasons  connected with the actions of the RR which I  cannot well
explain in letter.  In the event of your wanting currency
ce either to settle with Messrs Rives & Mills or for
your expenses I would suggest your selling some
of the R & F stock or a portion of the real estate
in Richmond as you might deem may find most advanta
-geous.
Your Mother & myself continue as well as
we can be in very unhappy times.  The rest of the family with the exception of ? I need
not convey? to you in the how much solicitude we
feel in regard to the you & our relations & friends.
in Pa.  Write us when you can,
        Your fond father
