Sunday Jany 18th
Dressed ¼ after 6. Clear & cold. After Breakfast, reading till about 12, the Baby came in while I was reading the Bible, all
the rest of the household at Church ^& came in at 10 M. after 1, as I finished reading; Now ¼ after 1. Shall walk some & talk if I have
anyone to talk to, till dinner. ^After Dinner, Berta in here till ¼ after 4, Mr Langhorne came in about 4, & now in here at ½ after 4. Shall walk
presently & go sometime to Katy’s room & continue so till Supper. Fine bright cold afternoon. After Supper, in my room Mr L: there
for a short time till 7, & then soon after Berta & Mary C. till 25 M. before 10. To bed. Slept 6 hours.
Monday Jany 19th
Dressed at 6. Said to be clear & cold, tho not colder than yesterday. After Breakfast, reading till between 10 & 11. Boyd my
Landlord came in & mentioned that he had made the agreement with Lee to pay him off to get possession of the house, a transaction
much against my feelings of propriety, to encourage such a swindling transaction. Reading again till between 12 & 1, when
Dr Tucker came in with Dr Page to see me, the latter of the Gloucester family, & a relation. They sat till 25 M. after 1, & went. I shall
walk, & read a little till Dinner, Baby now in here at 20 M before 2. I am to pay 25 Doll’s, Crenshaw $25 & Boyd $25 making the
aggregate to Lee of $75. After Dinner directly, Kate Mercer came in & sat till ½ after 4, & went to walk with Berta. The Baby in here
shall walk, & rest, till Supper. After Supper, Mr L. in my room at times, till 8, he & Katy came in, & soon after Berta &
Mary C. Katy & Mr L sat till 9, & went out, & the two girls sat till ½ after 9, when I went to bed very sick. Slept 6 hours.
Tuesday Jany 20th Sick. Hail & rain
Dressed 18 M. after 6. Cloudy & warmer. After Breakfast, very sick, & in much pain, trying to read, but unable on account of
sickness & darkness of the weather, dozed till 11. Between 11 & 12, the Baby was brought in & I read some Mary Cos: in here & Berta
just came in at ¼ after 1 & now in here at 20 minutes after. Shall do very little before Dinner. May read some & talk some. Weather
of the worst character. Dark & hailing. After Dinner, dark as night. Mr Langhorne & Berta in here for a short time near 4 oclock. Shall sit before ^the fire
& try & walk some presently & continue doing nothing till Supper. After Supper, Mr L. with me, Katy came in & sat & at 8, she & Mr Lang:

Wednesday Jany 21st, Letter from Mercer, answered it
Dressed 5 M after 6. Raining as it has all night. Forgot to say the Ground is covered with Snow that must have
fallen very lately. While going to eat my Breakfast got a letter from Mercer, very interesting as all of his are. After
Breakfast, reading the papers, Mr L. in here doing the same. I read till between 12 & 1, & then began a letter to Mercer
in answer to his, & finished just at 2. Baby in here all the time just gone out now 5 M after 2, still dark & cloudy, nothing
falling. After Dinner, reading till 4. Katy, the Baby, & Mr Langhorne came in & the two first still in here. Shall walk some
& talk till supper, now ½ after 4 very dark & cloudy. After Supper, by myself till 20 M: after 8, Katy & Mr Langhorne came
in & sat till ¼ before 10. Went to bed, & slept 6 ½.
Thursday Jany 22nd
Dressed 20 M: after 6. Neither clear or cloudy, a few stars to be seen, not so cold. After Breakfast, reading the papers &
doing other things till 25 M. before 1, when Katy & the Baby came in. I again read & got a letter from Catherine Speed about
Wm’s Furniture. Now ¼ before 2. Shall talk & walk some before Dinner. After Dinner, Mary Mercer came in & after her after
4, Dr Mercer came & they both sat till near dark. I then walked till Supper. After Supper, sat with Mr L: till 9, when
he went out out, Berta who had come in before he went, sat till 20 M: before 10. I to bed, slept full 6 or 6 ½ hours.
Friday Jany 23rd Old Anna expected to die.
Dressed at 6. Morning cloudy & warm. After Breakfast, between 8 & 9 Catherine Speed came in & we arranged about the furniture
I am to take of Wm Waller & pay for upon valuation. She sat till 10, or a little after, & went to Lady’s Hospital, I then read till 10 M
after 1, Baby just brought in. Shall walk & talk ^ & read till Dinner. After Dinner, reading till 25 M: after 4. The Baby just brought in
[illeg] Katy gone up town. Shall walk some & rest ^some till Supper. Bright afternoon. After Supper, Mr Langhorne in my
room till 9, at times, & then Berta & Mary Cosnahan till 20 M. to 10. To bed at ¼ before 10. Slept 7 hours. Anna expected to die

Saturday Jany 24rd Wm Waller’s furniture carried to auction.
Dressed 12 M. after 6. Cloudy. After Breakfast reading till near 10, much disturbed by persons moving Wm Waller’s
Furniture from the different ^rooms to be carried by Waggon's to the Auctioneer’s to be sold today, except that I retained. read till near
1, Katy came in, & soon after her, the Baby, read till now ½ after 1. Shall talk some, & walk some till dinner. Cloudy
all day. Expect to move early next week. After Dinner doing nothing, Katy & Baby came in soon, & now in here at ½ after 4
Shall walk presently & generally till Suppertime. After Supper, Mr L: in here, generally, till ¼ before 10. Slept nearly 7 hours
Sunday Jany ^25th. Poor Old Areana died
Dressed at 6, Cloudy. Areana just dead, as informed. She died at 10 or 11 at night. After Breakfast, reading, Mr Langhorne
came in & sat till after 10, & I read again, & the Bible till after 1. All the whole family at church, but the Baby, & I, they have just come
in, now 10 M. after 1. Shall walk & talk, if I have anyone to talk with till Dinner. After Dinner, as I was finishing mine
Corbin Mercer came in & sat with me till Sundown & went. Soon after, Dr Tucker came in & sat till night & went.
I then walked till Supper. After Supper, Mr Langhorne in here Katy came in & they sat till ½ after 8 & went out, &
Berta came in from Church & sat till 20 M. before 10. I got to bed at ¼ before 10, & slept badly only about 3 hours.
Monday Jany 26th.
Dressed ¼ after 6. Cloudy. Expected to commence moving today, but that man, Lee, has not yet vacated the premises
& says will not do it before the end of the Week. After Breakfast, reading till ¼ before 12, then, to keep my blood in circulation
Walked till ¼ after 12, & read, the baby in here, till 10 M. before 1. Mr Langhorne came in & sat till 5 M after 1. Now 10 M after
shall walk again, & talk or read till dinner. Mr Langhorne directly after Breakfast went to Lee, who says we may take
possession on Wednesday. After Dinner, Katy & Baby in my room & soon went out to a lady, Miss Mursell & then came
Mary Mercer, Loula, Leila Tucker & Kate Mercer. They sat till nearly night, & I then walked till near Suppertime.
After Supper, Mr Langhorne in my room, Katy came in. Boyd came to the Door & told us we might commence moving

to Creshaw's house in the morning, & had the Dining Carpet taken up preparatory to an early move of
the furniture, they sat till ½ after 9, & at 25 M before 10, I went to bed & slept 6 ½ hours.
Tuesday Jany 27th. Expected to move some things. Tommy & Dr Morris came. ^Letter from Mercer
Dressed at 6, said to be raining, if so shall not be able to move things as expected, & Martha’s family. After Breakfast,
not raining, but very cloudy, moving Martha & About 9 was surprized by Tommy coming in on Furlough from
the Army near Fred^#sburg, sitting with him, Dr Morris came in about 10, & sat a short time and went. Tommy sat
with me ^till 10 M before 1. Joe carried more things, some carpets &c. I then read till now ½ after 1. Still very cloudy. Shall
read & walk some till dinner. After Dinner reading, but so dark have to give it up, now 20 M: after 4. Shall walk some
& talk, if I have anyone to talk to, till Supper. Doctor Morris came in about dark, & after Supper, sat with the
family in my room till 10 M after 10, & went to his Hotel, & I to bed. Slept badly from drinking Coffee having been without it
so long, about 4 hours.

Thursday Jany 28th. Snowing. Doctor Morris goes
Dressed 25 M after 6. Snowing, & ground covered, what shall I do, Just having begun to move? After Breakfast, Snowing &
increasing very much. Read till just before 11. Tommy came in, & sat with me, the Baby in here, & Katy at times, till 2. Shall walk
some before dinner. Snowing still. Can’t move any. After Dinner, Tommy & Mr Langhorne ^sat with me till night. Tommy went, & I walked
some before Supper, & after Supper Mr Langhorne & Katy in my room, & then Berta. Katy & Mr L went to their room before 9
went to bed & slept 7 hours. Cold Doctor Morris went this afternoon without coming to take leave.
Thursday Jany 29th. Very Cold.
Dressed 12 M after 6, said to be clear, cleared in the night. Snow said to half leg deep, wind blowing hard &
very cold. After Breakfast, reading but much disturbed by moving the dining room furniture in spite of the deep snow & bad roads. Read

till 1, putting in the second load of Furniture. Baby just brought in, shall walk some, play with the Baby some & read till dinner.
Day bright, clear, & milder than I expected. About or before 2 Tommy & Dr Tucker came in & sat, Dr Tucker soon went
& Tommy staid to Dinner, & after dinner sat till after Sundown & went, & I went into Katy’s room, & walked some till near
Supper. After Supper, Mr Langhorne with me at times, till ¼ before 10. I went to bed & slept 6 or 7 hours, not very cold.
Friday Jany 30th. Expect to go to my new home today.
Dressed 10 M. after 6. Clear & not very cool, shall go myself to my new home, & maybe Berta & Mary. Katy will follow
tomorrow. I dread it, through such roads. After Breakfast, reading till I was much disturbed by their coming in to
dismantle my room, & carry the Furniture to the Wagon. I went into Kate’s room to get rid of the confusion, & found
Mary & Kate Mercer, & sat with them till near 2. After an earlier Dinner than usual, I started with Mr Lang ^home
& little Corbin & Mercer Cosnahan to our new home, & soon got there, altho the Streets were in most horrible order.
Mr Langhorne returned in the Carriage & Berta & Mary C: came. Mr Crenshaw came over while Mr L. was here
& soon after Dr Mercer & Tommy came in. Dr Mercer & Crenshaw, after him, went, the Girls came, & Tommy
sat till Sundown & went. I sat with the Girls before & after Supper till ½ after 9. Went to bed & slept 6 ½ hours
Saturday Jany 31. Expect Katy & Baby today
Dressed at 8 M before 6. Clock set slower. Clear cold morning. House much meaner & uncomfortable than I expect^ed
completely out of order & cold to open. After Breakfast, reading the papers, Berta in here some of the time till 10 M after 1.
Very cold, & hazy, & I very uncomfortable. Expect the carriage soon with Katy, the Baby, & Mr L. Shall not do much till Dinner.
After Dinner, about 4, Tommy came & sat, & at Sundown Mr L. Katy, & Baby came. Tommy sat till near dark, & went, & after
Supper, I sat pretty much alone till ½ after 9. Went to bed & slept 6 ½ hours. Weather more moderate.
Sunday. Feby 1st
Dressed 20 M. after 6. Moderate morning. Clear. After Breakfast, reading the papers, about 9, Tommy came in & sat with me,

& between 11 & 12, Katy, the Baby, & Mr L: came in & staid a short time, now ¼ before 2. Joe Moore from Dr Morris’s farm came in
to see me just now. It has clouded up, & looks like rain. I shall talk with Tommy till dinner. ^It did rain some. He will dine here. After Dinner
Tommy & I sitting together, about 4, Corbin, Royale Rudd, Bobby, & Frank Stabler came into my room, & after a while I was
taken very sick with pain in my Stomach & Bowels, & they went to another room. After a time Mr L: came to my room &
sat till after Supper, when Katy & Berta came in at 8. Mr L: went to his room & Katy & Berta sat till 20 M. before 10. I went to bed ^& slept 6 1/2 hours.
Monday Feby 2nd. Berta sick
Dressed 3 M. before 6. Nearly clear. After Breakfast, reading till nearly 10, then went to look at the house & it's arrangements.
Went into the basement where is the Dining room & Store room, came back & went into the third story, & came down into my room, &
read till Catherine came to see me ^between 10 & 11 & sat about ½ an hour. Read again, & then put some papers in order, & the Baby came in about
or after 12, put the papers in order, & went again in the basement where Katy is putting down the Dining room Carpet, & came
back, now ¼ after 1. Shall do little else till dinner. Fine cool day. After Dinner reading very little by myself till ¼ after 4.
Shall walk about some & talk if I should have anybody to talk to till Supper. After Supper in my room alone till about
9. Mr Langhorne came in, & sat till 20 M. after 9, when he was called out by his Employee in Tobacco Factory & another
who did not get out of his Carriage. I sat alone till 25 M before 10, went to bed & slept 6 hours. Clear Sunset.
Tuesday, Feby 3rd. Snowing. Letter from Mercer. Check to Mr Langhorne $150 for house
Dressed 12 M after 6. Snowing after a bright sunset ^yesterday. Ground covered. Got a letter from Mercer before Breakfast, stopped snow-
=ing about that time. After Breakfast, Mr Langhorne came to my room & paid me $69 for servants hire to Taliaferro up to 1st day
of Jany 1853. I then read the papers till ^after 11, & drew a check to Mr Langhorne for 150 dollars, for expenses of the house.
Had the melancholy intelligence of the Death of poor Walker Vest. Very much shocked as I had supposed he had gotten
well, But Scarlet Fever is a most insidious & often kills after we think it overcome. How I pity his poor Parents!

Now 12. I shall now read, & write no more, unless something seems worthy of remark. Illegible Dr Tucker & Tommy
just come in. They sat till 20 M. after 1. After Dinner, Mary Mercer came in & sat all the Afternoon till after Sundown & went.
Bitter cold, walked a very little being too cold in the passage. After Supper, Katy in here, & Mr Langhorne some of the time, till
20 M. before 10. I went to bed & slept as well as I could for the cold, about 6 hours.
Wednesday Feby 4th Bitter cold. Corbin C: sick since yesterday.
Dressed 5 M. after 6. Very cold & clear. After Breakfast, reading till after 9, a workman came to mend the back in the fireplace
in my room, & I put on my overcoat, & went into the Basement, dining room, & sat there till near 11, & came up to my room &
found that the Back was finished, & a fire made up. I then went to Katy’s room that mine should be better warmed, & sat with
her dressing the Baby till 12. Came into my room, & read, & dozed till now 20 M. after 1. Shall go upstairs to Berta’s room where
she & Corbin C. are sick. She since Monday, & he yesterday. Shall walk some & read till dinner. After Dinner, reading till
½ after 4. Shall go into Katy’s room & walk some till Supper. Seems to be clouding, & very, very cold. After Supper, went into
Katy’s room, & sat with her & Mr L. till ½ after 9. Came to my room & ^to bed. Slept 6 or 7 hours. Cold night
Thursday Feby 5th. Snowing. After Breakfast, in my room reading papers
Dressed 20 M after 6. Cold & snowing fast. After Breakfast, in my room reading the papers, went into Katy’s room between 11 & 12,
for a few minutes, & returned to mine & read again till ¼ before 2. Snowing constantly all the time & now a lot. A true Siberian Scene,
& is cold. What is to become of us, everything gives a deeper colour to my misfortunes. Shall do little but hug the fire till dinner
May walk into Katy’s room for a short time. After Dinner, Reading, Mr Langhorne in my room now ¼ after 4. Shall not do anything
more till supper, very dark not snowing but seems to be raining as cold as it is. After Supper, in my room Mr L. a short time
& Berta till ½ after 9, by this clock which is as too slow. Slept upwards of 7 hours.
Friday Feby 6th Raining.

Dressed 25 M after 6, had set the Clock a ½ hour faster, with the Town clock. Raining as it has done all night on the Snow. The
roads will be impassable to all vehicles. After Breakfast, reading till just before 11. Mr Blane & Tommy came in & sat & talked till
20 M. before 2. He is a very intelligent & agreeable gentleman, & a good man. He is on his way down James River, to Mr Wm B Harrison’s.
It seems to have cleared up & much warmer, now 10 M before 2. After Dinner reading till 5 Oclock Mr Langhorne in here. Shall do
nothing till Supper. After Supper, ^he sat in my room till 8 or after & then Katy till ¼ before 10, went to bed & slept 6 ½ hours. Cold.
Saturday Feby 7th. Cold. Wrote to Mercer. Got a Telegram from Page
Dressed ¼ after 6. Cold, after having been warmer yesterday. After Breakfast, reading till about 10, then commenced a letter
to Mercer, & wrote a pretty long one & finished at 12, then read again till 5 M. before 2. Shall walk some & talk, & read till dinner
The Baby in here. After Dinner, reading, Mary Mercer, Loola, & Mr Blane came in & sat till Sundown, & I had the most pleasant after-
=noon that I have had since my Exile. I shall walk some & do nothing more till Supper. After Supper, so sick & costive took
another Blue pill after the one I took the night before without effect. The passage a very small one, yesterday morning evidently not
from that, I lay by myself in the Easy Chair till ¼ after 9 in a torpid state. Berta in here for a short time. Went to bed &, & dozed uneasily
6 or 7 hours, suffering & groaning all the time. I got at dinner a, Telegram from Page, saying she would be up soon, if we were fixed. Answ-
=ered by Mary Mercer, that we were not fixed entirely, but would let her know when we were.
Sunday Feby 8th. More moderate. After Breakfast, reading between 9 & 10. Tommy came
Dressed at 6. Clear & more moderate. After Breakfast, between 9 & 10, Tommy came in & sat till now 1, & will dine here I suppose.
I shall sit with him till dinner. ^Unexpectedly Tommy went after 1, & the Baby came in, & I read, Mr Langhorne in here till dinner. After Dinner
In my room alone till 4 reading. Shall do very little till Supper. After Supper, sat with Berta & Mary, & soon after Katy & lastly Mr
Langhorne, who had supped with Mr Crenshaw across the Road or street. The Ladies sat till 9 & Mr L till ¼ before 10, when I went to
bed very unwell &, Slept 6 hours or more. Sent another Telegram to Richmond to Page as by a message from her ^yesterday Get that by Mary Mercer the morning it appears she did not.
Monday Feby 9th.

Dressed at 10 M after 6. Clear moderate morning. After Breakfast, in my room reading, about 10, or a little before, Katy
came into my room with the Baby not dressed, driven from her’s by workmen coming in to lay the back of her fireplace.
She began to dress the Baby, I reading till she finished the operation. She continued in my room, I reading generally, & dozing
a little, till now ¼ before 2, the Baby asleep. I shall walk, & read & talk till dinner. After Dinner, in my room doing nothing, nothing
to read, Katy in here with the Baby at 20 M. after 4. Shall try & walk some & talk till Supper. It has cleared up. After supper, in my room
with Katy & Berta till ½ after 9, Katy went out at 9. I went to bed at ½ after 9. Slept 6 or 7 hours. Warmer.
Tuesday Feby 10. Old Tom sick. Letter from Mercer.
Dressed at 5 M after 6. Morning partially cloudy & warm. After Breakfast in my room reading till 5 M: after 1. Katy & the Baby
in here before 10 & went out at 12 to get the Baby asleep. Shall do little more before dinner, may walk some, & read some & go to Katy’s room
After Dinner, doing nothing, nothing to read, now ¼ after 4. Day bright & very warm. Shall do nothing but walk some & go to
Katy’s room now & then, till Supper. Old Tom being sick makes me very uncomfortable, for he studied my comfort & sympathized in
my suffering. After Supper, with Berta & Mr L: for a short time. Berta sat till ½ after 9, & I went to bed & slept 6 ½ hours.
Wednesday Feby 11th.
Dressed 20 M. after 6. Cloudy & said to have been raining in the night. After Breakfast raining a little at intervals, reading till
1/4 after 11. Tommy came in, & is here now at 25 M. before 2, Dr Mercer came in, & sat & talked, & he & Tommy went at Sundown. I then walked
a little, & went into Katy’s room a short time. After Supper sat with Mr Langhorne, Katy & Berta in my room till
25 M. before 10, & went to bed, & slept 6 hours or a little more. Cleared up in the night.
Thursday Feby 12th. Doctr Langhorne brought Belladonna for the children as a Prophylactic
Dressed at 6. Clear & cooler. After Breakfast, in my room Reading till after 11, the Baby was brought, & after a while I read again till
near 12. Katy came in & went at 12 with Berta & Mary to town. Dr Langhorne came & brought Katy some extract of Belladonna, to be
