came in after 4, & sat & talked till 25 M. after 5, still here. I shall be with him till he goes, & then walk some before Supper. After Supper in the
Porch with Berta & Mary. Berta went over to Mr. Hurt's & Mr. Crenshaw returned with her ^between 8 & 9, & sat till 10, and went, & I to bed. Slept 6 hours.
Monday Aug 24th, Mr. Langhorne Came from Spring,
Shaved and dressed 23 M. after 5, Rather cloudy. After Breakfast, a little after 8, Went to ride with Berta & Mary C. up the road & through
Judge Daniels to the Lexington TurnPike & above Warwicks farm. Came back the same way & home 10M. before 10. Day pleasant & windy, denoting
I hope, rain before long. Found John with a note from Mr. Irby declining to buy him at the Price asked. Answered his note & abated $500 & sent
it by John. Read a little, now 10M after 12. Shall I expect do little & read a little till dinner, entirely alone. After a while Cook John -
came in with a note from Mr Irby making an offer or proposing a refference of $3500. Will give an answer this Afternoon or tomorrow morning.
now 5M: before 1. Got a message by Mercer Cos: from Corbin Mercer, bidding me goodbye as he was about to start this afternoon to Dublin
Depot, I suppose to meet an expected raid of Yankees. I have heard nothing of it. Oh! Dreadful times. After Dinner in the Porch
reading a little, & nothing to read now 1/4 after 5, raining a little out of the Skirt of a small Cloud. Neither of the trains came on the Tennessee
Road is it possible that the Yankees have intercepted them? Mr Langborne was expected from the Springs, hope nothing has happened. Mr
Langhorne came after 6, Cars impeded by the running off of the freight Cars. All well at the Springs. After Supper, sat in here [?]
till 9, & retired & I to bed 25M before 10. Slept 6 hours. had
Tuesday Aug 25th Sold John.
Dressed 10M. after 5. Cloudy & dark & warm. After Breakfast, Mr Langhorne came to my room, & I asked him to call on Mr Irby & sell John for
me, trying to get $4,000 for him, if he finds he cannot do that to close with him for $3500. He thinks Irby will give $4000. I wish he may.
Reading, about 9. Amanda came in & informed Israel & Priamus, at Burton's Hospital, had been beaten by some of the managers
there for disorderly conduct. She went & about 10, Israel came & mentioned that he had come from there privately to complain to me. I fear
from his manner that both of them were impudent. I told him to go back & send Priamus to me, that I would get Mr Langhorne to go
there, & inquire into the Merits of the Case. Priamus has not yet come at 10M before 1. Mr Langhorne, I suppose at his Mil[l?]. Shall read

& do business with Mr L. when he comes, if, before dinner Priamus came before Dinner soon after Mr L. got in, & told his tale
of the occurrence at the Hospital. Mr L. will see to it. After Dinner gave a Bill of sale for John to Mr L. to give to Mr [IJ?] Irby
& John is no longer mine. Threatening rain, slight Showers once or twice. Reading in the Porch some & in my room till now
5M before 5, dark & a cloud seems approaching with muttering Thunder. Alone shall read some & walk before Supper. I
got a letter from Katy, who says the Baby is much better. Had a fine rain about 6. After Supper, Mr Langhorne came in
supped out. Berta & Mary in here. Mr Langhorne at 9, & they sat till 10M before 10. I to bed. Slept near 6 hours. Cooler. (Strikethrough) Wrote to Mercer.
Wednesday Aug 26th. A letter from Mercer. Excitement in Town about a Yankee Raid
Shaved & dressed 25M. after 5. Cloudy. After Breakfast, got a letter from Mercer & no Richmond paper. ^About 9. Commenced an answer to
his two last & finished a pretty long one before 12. Reading it & preparing it for the Office. now 1/4 before 1. Have not yet received money for
sale of John. Shall talk as I have nothing to read till dinner, if I have anybody to talk with. Beautiful cool day after the fine
rain of Yesterday afternoon. After Dinner. Much excitement in town about a Yankee Raid, Militia preparing to go up to New River.
Mr. Crenshaw came over accoutred to go, as soon as Transportation is prepared. I borrowed a paper from Mrs Scott as I failed to get one
from Richmond. Yankees said to be at the Warm Springs & in Rockbridge. Reading till now 35M. after 5. Entirely alone. Shall walk
some before Supper. 1000 Militia started for New River about or before Sunset. After Supper, after sometime Berta &
Mary C. in here, & at 9 Mr. Langhorne came in & all sat till 10M. before 10 & to bed. Slept more than 6 hours.
Thursday, Aug 27th. Cool, Irby paid for John. Wrote to Mercer
Dressed 25M. after 5. Cool morning for the Season. After Breakfast at 8 went to ride with Berta over to & through Wash Street
to Tate's Spring road & down up that to (Strikethrough) above the Spring. Came back by the College Hospital over to & through Diamond Hill & Church Street
home before 10. Got Richmond Paper & reading in my room shut up till 5M. to 1. Weather very cool, you may say Cold. Mr Langhorne just
come in & brought me a check from [II?] Irby for $3500 for purchase of Cook John. Berta & Mary in here at the time ^Dr Mercer came in for a short time Shall read some more & talk
some till dinner. After Dinner, in my room reading entirely alone till now 5. Shall read some more & walk about & go in the Garden before

Supper. Very Cool. After writing thus far, Loula Mercer & Mr Blane a young man came in after 5 & sat till 1/4 after 6 & went. I shall now
walk some before Supper. After Supper, Berta & Mary C. in here & Mr Langhorne between 8 & 9 & sat till 25M. before 10 &
Mr L much sooner. I to bed 20M. before 10. Cool night. Slept 6 1/4 hours.
Friday, Aug 28th
Shaved & dressed 28M after 5. Foggy & cold. Slept under a Blanket last night. After Breakfast, Reading & dozing
some, entirely alone till 10M: after 12. Weather bright & cold but seems now a little warmer with high S. West wind. shall try
the Portico some if not too cold & read till dinner. After Dinner, reading till 4 in the Portico, & in my room till 1/4 after 5
May read (strikethrough) some more & walk some before Supper. Warmer. After Supper, Berta & May in here, Mr Langhorne after 9 has been
to Mr Scott's. They sat till 5M. after 10 & went & I to bed. Slept 6 hours. Mr Langhorne starts to the Springs. Militia returned.
August 29th Saturday. Mr L: goes to the Springs
Dressed 1/4 after 5. Cloudy & dripping rain, Just now. Mr L. started from the house for the Cars at 1/4 after 4. After Breakfast had a slight
Shower, did some business. Gave Joe Money to pay for Salt furnished to the County of Campbell, $15.50. Wrote a note by him ^To Mr. Dryden for Catherine's
Clothes left with her &c Received from Martha Talb 6 dollars for 6 days, washing out by the day at $1. Then read the papers till now 20
M: after 12. Shall read more in the Porch before Dinner. After Dinner Reading & dozing some in my room till 1/4 after 4, then went into the
Portico & read till 1/4 after 5 & came in. Shall go in the Garden & yard & walk about before Supper, turning cooler. Very lonesome being alone all day,
those here, no company for me. Berta &c After Supper, Berta & Mary in here till 1/2 after 9 & I to bed 25M. before 10. Slept 6 1/2 hours.
Sunday, Aug 30th. had some fire.
Shaved & dressed 37M after 5. Cool, had some fire. After Breakfast, very unwell with Diarrhea & cold tho sitting by a fire, reading & entirely
alone in the house, now 20M to 1. Heard those who went to Church come in just now. Shall continue to read ^till dinner. I have suffered with Cold all day &
utter loneliness. It is hard to have to support so much ingratitude in lonliness & imprudence of Conduct. After dinner, reading alone till between 3 &4
Corbin Mercer came in & after him Royall Rudd. They sat till after 4 & went to Church with Berta. Johnny Mercer had been here before they

came in. Mary C. & Emma ^Hurl came in at near 5 & sat sometime xxx (strikethrough). Soon after she went Mr Crenshaw came in & sat till dark.
After Supper, Berta & Mary C. sat till between 8 & 9 & went up to bed & I sat by my self till 25M before 10. to bed, slept badly
5 1/2 hours, sick with Diarrhea
Monday, Aug 31st, Katy, Baby & Mr L: came home
Dressed 7M after 5. Clear & cool, fire. Diarrhea continues. After Breakfast sick & weak in the Easy chair Reading very little & dozing
& sleeping till about 11. Loula Mercer came into spend the day & have been with her talking till now 10M before 1. I expect to have her
company before & after Dinner till she goes. After dinner, Katy, Baby, & Mr L came at 4, while I was talking to Loula who has been with me
since Dinner. Shall do nothing but talk with them till Supper, now 20M after 5. After Supper, in here alone, the rest of the household
in their rooms, till 25M. before 10. To bed. Slept 6 1/4 hours. Sick after 1, had to get up for awhile.
Tuesday, Sept 1st. Autumn.
Shaved & dressed 32M. after 5. Clear & cool. Very weak & sick. Diarrhea bad. After Breakfast, Katy & Baby came into my room
& sat & talked some & I reading some. The Baby soon went to sleep & was put on my bed we continued so till 10, when Katy carried
the Baby to her room, & I read till 20M. after 10. Dr Tucker came in & sat & talked till 11 & went & I read till now 10M. before 1. Diarrhea
seems better. Bright day & warmer. Shall read & walk about some till Dinner. After Dinner, reading in my room, at 4 Katy came
in prepared to take the Carriage to go to the Tennessee Cars to meet the Corpse of Leslie Mosby who died on Sunday night at Wythe-
=Ville & brought down for Internment here ^very Sudden. After she went I continued to read till 20M. after 5. Shall Walk some if I am able before
Supper. After Supper, Berta, & Mary & the boys ^in here Berta & boy went out before 9, & Mary a little after, & I sat till 25M before 10
& went to bed & slept confused by 6 hours or more. feverish.
Wednesday, Sept 2nd. A check for $150 to Crenshaw for rent.
Dressed 35M. after 5, later on account of pain in Abdomen & debility, 2 smaller Evacuations. After Breakfast Katy & the Baby
in here I reading & talking at times when Katy went out to get Baby to sleep & I sick, read some & dozed in the Easy chair till 12, then
