Williamsburg - Dec 13th 1865

My Dear Sir

An apology is due you for my delay in acknowledging the receipt of your letter, & checks - one amounting to $100.00 [illegible], on salary account, & the other for $250.00, in my favor, on account of current expenses. Peachy [illegible] received your check for $161.00 insurance. Until today I did not get from him the information you wanted, hence my delay in writing. The houses insured are the [illegible], & President's house - I have not the Policies - Peachy says you have new ones can be, & ought to be obtained shall I apply, or will you. Hamell's house ought to be insured at once. They are careless there - Robert, Lamb - has been requested to called money in England if he could [illegible] as a regular agent though - there are 18 students, & about 32 grammar boys - in attendance - I do not care, [illegible], if the college is removed - I believe an attempt might destroy it. The let alone policy is the true one for you gentlemen in authority [illegible] present at best.

Your sir [illegible]

Benj. S. Ewell.

See next leaf

Farewell, [illegible] Esq.

P.S.

Mr Thomas, Giles, has sent a communication to the Faculty asking or proposing to continue or rather to [illegible] the suit he has been engaged in for 20 per cent of sum [illegible] - All the papers were destroyed on the evacuation of Richmond, as is stated by him, & the suit will be entirely renewed - I understood from his letter Judge Coamp did not object to his proposal - In this though I may be mistaken. He wanted an answer at once & there was no time to consult you. Accordingly I informed him that the Faculty agreed to his proposal - Unless you object, he will proceed - Write at once if you do He was urgent, or the Faculty would not have taken any step without 1st getting your advice -

Your [illegible] -

Brig S. Ewell
