Johnson Island, Ohio, July 5, 1865

My dear Brother,
Your letter of the 13th reached me lately, I had been looking anxiously all last week for one from you, and was truly glad to get this one, I had written several both to you and Sister Lavalette, and hope you may both get them in due course.  I am sorry to hear of Flavius Harman's death and also Mrs.Wetten's tho the last was a relief to all parties.  Tho' her death was a horrible one.  Thank you for your solicitude for my condition and wants.  But make yourself as easy as you can, I have got things arranged so that I can get all the necessaries (sp) that the authorities here will permit me to receive, therefore you need send me nothing.  At least till you hear further from me.  I am glad you concluded to send me only tobacco, that is the only thing I would now wish or write for, but if not already sent, send nothing.  I told you I had some hopes of being permitted to return to England–either as an English subject or on Parole.  I shall most likely know the result of my application in a few days when I will write to you again.  I have written to Robert Wilkinson and am looking for an answer this very mail. To Charlotte I have written often but only received one letter, her first miscarried.  I am sorry you do not give a flattering account of the crop [?] the promise when I left was very good and Capt Peery told me today that his wife had written to him speaking of the very fine crops they had.  He is well and also, so are the other prisoners from our section. [Ira?] St Wallace of Ky is here, he gave me his sister's address and told me to send for anything I wanted either food or clothing, do you know her? Mrs. RB Alexander [Payti?] has also written and will send what I want.  GIve my love to Betty, your wife and family and kind regards to all friends and neighbors trusting that all are as well as I am.
I remain Your Affectionate Brother,
E. A. Holmes
