so he was not there – we found Miss Mary Chapman

Mr Williams of Richmond at Grace Church.


we left there at 12 o’Clock next day –


14th on our way home we stopped at Lock


Somond where were services held by Red. Mr


Mortimer and took the sacrament. – got home


at dark –


15 –     Gathered apples in on hand – wine saps (?) – leaving 


            2 trees to gather from next week – I think


            we gathered about 50 bushels = Mrs


            P.N.G. Cooke & her daughter Miss Lucy & young


            son dined with us on their way from


            Mrs David Harris’s – they went home after

17        Jane and her sister Mary went to Elk Hill to sing

Cornelia very ill with Pneumonia –


19th I went to C. H (Ct. Day) Mr George Lums

      T. B.  came home and dined with me


      Jane went this evening to spend night with


      Miss C. Grinnan who is ill – very warm


      night, warm enough in Library without


      fire –


20th Miss Cornelia Grinnan died this


      morning at Woodville the present residence


      of her brother Dr A. G. Grinnan of Pneumo=


      nia after illness of about 8 days


      Jane (my wife) was with her when


      she died –


22nd Miss Cornelia Grinnan’s remains were interred


      to day in Garden at Woodville (to be removed)


     Miss C G’s remains afterwards removed to


     Fredericsburg (sic) – She was said to be a very


     interesting and noble lady – She had spent


     much time in Scotland with Duke


     of Argyle’s family with whom she was


     connected by marriage – one of the Dukes


     of Argyle married Miss Glassol (?) of Virginia

Dec. 24  Albert Bolling’s family came this


            evening –


      25th we all went to st. Pauls (Sunday)


            Revd Mr Mortimer preached – T. B. family


            came to dinner and spent night –


      27th I went to dog Town to get leather left


             for me by Robt Jordan –


            4 sides upper – 2 ds. (sic) sole – 1 calf


            1 hog skin weight (exclusive of calf & hogs)

            After coming home from Dogtown I rode on


            Rosa (?) to T. B.’s to dinner and back in evening


28        Rained last night – cloudy to day – Rode with


            Dr A. G. Grinnan to Mr Budwcll’s (?) who has just come


            home on short leave -


29        Jane went to W. A. Bolling’s – I dined with


            Dr Shuthis (?)


30th      Killed 1 hog yesterday weighed 90 lbs vid Dec 6


            commenced making dam to new ice pond


            Family from La Vallee here to day


31        Mr Strahan came & spent night with us

1865    Jany 1st Bright, cold – went to St Pauls -


            Strahan went home – Miss F. Ferguson, Miss M. Meade


            & Miss Sally Vaughn went with us to church.


2nd        Miss Ferguson & Miss Vaughn went home - got some ice


            into large ice house from small woods pond.

Jany 3rd Tuesday went to Dogtown bot (sic) 60 yds cotton


            cloth paid Mr Gibbs (for W. P. Holland) $270- for


            it


4th        Paid Edward Randolph for Medecines (sic), sugar &


            Salt, nails, bottle of brandy - $444.45 –


            Killed remainder of our hogs 11 in number


            Richard Randolph Esq. dined with us –


5th        The 11 hogs killed yesterday weighed


            1202 lbs which added to what we killed


            before (43 in number) weighed 54 hogs in all


            7077 lbs averaging 131 lbs to hog -


           


 


7th        I drove over very bad roads to Logan’s came


            home to late dinner –

Jany 9th Captain Loyd (?) came by direct (?)


            of Maj. Maynard to borrow corn to be


            returned in kind – I promised him


            25 barrels –


            My favorite mare Rosabel (sic) lost her foal


            to day – her mother Mary Deane did so


            likewise with her first foal and


            afterwards raised 4 mare foals


4th        Tuesday – it rained heavily for ½ the night


            last night and several hours to day – The river


            now 10 P.M. is very high and rising – I


            expect to see in the morning very high wa=


            ter as I suppose there is a great quantity


            of melted snow to come down –


11th      Three Cavalry men of 3rd V-a cavalry came


            to day to dinner & spent to night detained by


            high water – Apperson, Cook & Turner New


            Kent cavalry


            Water rose within about 16 inches of top of


            rock near tobacco barn about 8 below mark on same


            8 inches lower than last year –


12        Cavalry men left this evening – water having fallen


14        T. B & family came to spend night –


15        They went home after dinner (Sunday)


16        Drove Dr Grinnan with me to C. H. in my buggy


            Paid J. Thompson $125 for brandy (?) & took balance
