Staunton August 8th: 1863

Dsir

Heretofore I obtained from Mr. Cridland & Mr. Moore
(consuls) a considerable number of certificates of citizenship
for subjects of Great Britain living in this vicinity.
In consequence of some difficulty Mr. Moore had with the
Confederate Government. I understand he has left Rich
=mond not to return to it, at least in any official capacity.
Thinking it probable that the British Government would
have an agent of some sort at that point to attend to
the interests of her subjects I address this letter to the
British Consul [underscored] in hopes it may fall into hands
that will give me the information I desire. Are
any such certificates now granted?  If so I wish to
prepare an affidavit for a man living here.  Besides
the affidavit ( the general form of which I know) the
Consul required that $1.25 should be sent to him
in gold or silver & 25 cents in any current bank note
of the country.  Has any change in the terms been
made?  Be kind enough to let me hear from
you at your earliest convenience &  obliged
            Yours respectfully
