(2) metrical ration by a/b.

That is the equality of differences constitutes arithmetical proportion; & the equality of quotients constitutes geometrical proportion. For instance if 5 - 3 = 7 - 5 or if a - b = c - d the numbers 5,3,7,5 or the quantities a,b,c,d are said to be in arithmetical proportion.

But if a/b = c/d then are the quantities a, b, c, d, said to be in geometrical proportion; that is a, is to b, as c, is to d, the the meaning of which expression is, that a, contains or is contain'd in b, as often as c, contains, or is contained in d.
