June 1861
Monday 24 Wind E Clear & dry, Began Harvest -
I am I hope a little better but still very unwell.
There was very heavy firing this Evg at 5. Oclk
continuing for at least 1 1/2 hours (in the North East)
apparently near the mouths of the Rappahannock or
Potomac Rivers - I cant think at what place? as there
are no forts there that I know of - Four deserters
from the Yankee Army at Red Point came to Mathews Friday night
& were carried to Gloster Point Saturday, They report that great
dissatisfaction exists among Them & nearly all would desert if they could.
They were in the Battle at Bethel and say they were
awfully cut up & terribly threshed & that no body of men could
have stood before our Artillery fire. The Howitzers did the work
and did it thoroughly. They also say the truth will never
be got from their commanders, but they believe there were
at least 700 killed wounded & missing.
Tuesday 25 Wind SW Clear,. In Harvest. Warner & Mr Goggin
went to Gloster Point, The Cannonading was said to be at
"Carters Creek" on the Rappahannock River, but as there
is no Battery there that I know of & nothing to be attained by attacking it
if there is, I cant think it is so
