May 1862

Friday 9th
Wind S W Clear, Sangborn Ploughing new ground.
The bal of which I have let West cultivate -
Fanned out Wheat. Delivered Mr Hogg 15 Bfls Corn and
6 1/2 Bushels Wheat.  I sold Jas Robins 10 Bushels Wheat,
Mr Hogg started with our troops from Gloucester Point but, he
says
, he was Taken sick and returned but will go again
this evening to join them, I hope he will do it -
My boy Thomas hired to Mr Bryan ran off to Gloster Point
last night taking with one of Mr Byran's best mules -
About 200 Negroes have gone there. Many taking with them Horses Mules
and other stolen property, all of which is received and kept.
What honest men the modern Puritans are!!!
Maria and the children spent the day at Wilsons Creek.

Saturday 10
Wind SW. Clear & Mild - Fanning out wheat. Stopped cow ponds,
I went to C.H.  A dreadful state of things exists, nearly every one
is loosing Negroes, Mr K Perrin 7. JM Backhouse 19. J Perrin 8. Mr Custis 4
Mr Smith 8.  Mr Deans 7. Mr Clarke 4 & a Buggy & Horses,  Col Page 2.
Mr Carlisle 6.  Mr Dabney 3. etc etc.  Mine at home have not gone yet,
Three Yankee scouts breakfasted at Dr Cary's this mg & they are roaming
all over the Country contiguous to Gloster Point, but I have
heard of no outrages committed by them thus far.

Sunday 11th
Wind SE Clear, I staid at home, Maria and
the children spent the day at Belle Farm -
Mrs Taylor & her children are there without a protector
and the Negroes are some leaving and others insubordinate.
[Ailsey?] her maid left carrying all Mrs Taylor's best clothes
& other valuables - She does not know where Col Taylor is -
the last she heard of him was from Norfolk but he expected
then to go to North Carolina, the pretended Yankee scouts
are straglers from their Army & are committing depredations -
They broke into Mr. Robin's Desk & stole some Things I don't know what

Monday 12
Wind SE Clear.  Taking dirt from Corn with Three ploughs.
Replanting the first Corn planted, The pretended deserter who
was in this neighborhood Saturday was an abolition emisary - Carter
says he persuaded my boy Thomas to go away to Gloster Point.

Tuesday 13
Wind W Clear.  Began to weed Corn.  Taking dirt from Corn.
I went to Adams Shop after Plough castings -
Heard that France had acknowledged our independence & demanded a
cessation of hostilities.  (But I don't believe it)  Jackson has whipped the
enemy badly in the Valley & is driving them before him & that the enemy
were retiring from before Beauregard at Corinth - (I hope it is true)
but I await more authentic information before I give much faith to it.
