Sense & Appetite, or a mere brutal sensation, addition in which /addition deletion where /deletion ye. mind takes no part; this term therefore has been look'd on as very obnoxious to great Exceptions in Morals; but is a moral deletion unclear /deletion determination ye. worse for being mingl'd with ye. frame & constitution of our nature; & for being steddy in its decisions? Why should such a divine instinct be rank'd deletion below /deletion ^ addition less suitable /addition ye. dignity of deletion human nature /deletion addition ye. mind, than /addition those self evident perceptions which are conversant in abstract truths, & necessarily ^ addition underline & instantaneously /underline /addition arise from ye. clear relations of things? as reason does often err, why should any other power of perception be despis'd because not infallible?

Think it evidently appears from what has been said, yt. it is neither ye. pleasure nor agreable sensations yt. accompany ye. Exercise of ye. several Affections, nor those consequently to ye. actions, yt constitute moral Obligation, or excite's ye. idea of it in us. yt. pleasure is after ye. idea of obligation, & some times we are oblig'd & owne ourselves under an obligation, to such affections & actions, as are attended with pain; as in trials of virtue, we are forc'd to sacrifice private to publick good, & present pleasure to future interest. We have pleasure in assisting an ag'd parent, but it is neither ye perceptions nor prospect of yt pleasure, yt. gives us ye. idea of obligation to yt. conduct.

Therefore when say obligation, duty, ought & c. they are meant as uncompounded feelings, & simple ideas of ye. human mind,
