We also left 3 men in the
hospital at Montery James
Austin James Bray and Dr
Hailey. From Camp Edway we
started on Sunday night after
dark and marched twelve
miles and took up camp
just before day. That night
one of the baggage wagons
was turned over but without
much damage. We were on the
road again next morning early.
This was Monday the 3rd
of August. We arrived at
the big spring that day a
bout 1. or 2. o clk. Here we re
ceived news that our men
had 3 or 4 hundred yankeys

surrounded on Valley mou
ntain and was waiting for
reenforsements to take them.
We struck out in quick time
for Vally mountain in high
spirits at the thoughts of a
fight but it proved to be
a false alarm. Two of the
Baltimoreans fainted and
fell on the road from the
excefs of heat. We arrived at
Vally mountain just before
night. Before we could get
our tents up it rained
and we got wet and it
rained about every other day
while we stayed there.
I was on duty about every other
