Avon Cottage. Sunday Augt. 1st.

Very many thanks - My Dear Mrs Howe for your pleasant letter of friday & for sending that from Mr. underline Carter /underline - It promises well & is as attentive to you as it is possible for him to be (I suppose) to anyone, at least it is very polite, but he seems to wish to avoid being thought that he can have any other biass except to what is just & for the good of the underline Community /underline. Yours being supported by one from Mr. P. which I believe was sent by last Wednesday's post, will I trust prevent your correspondent finding so much right in the other two Candidates. I have a letter from Dr- Birdmore in wh. he says he is the first of the three chosen & unanimously. I shall write to him by this post & let him know what you have accomplish'd for him, but will keep the letter wh. you say I may send to him until I see him here, wh. I conclude will be in a few days
