1.

During ye. deletion unclear /deletion Civil war broke out in Switzerland ye. Common People having in all ye. disputes between ye. Popes & Emps. join'd with ye. latter, & ye. Nobi with ye. former, who were for this drove out of ye. Country, but Rodolph 1. assisted this affair.

In ye. Reign of Albert 1. all this Country except ye. Cantons of Uri, Switz, & Undervald, (call'd ye. Forest Towns) submitted to ye. H. of Austria, who order'd ye. Godr. to use them ill; this occasion'd ye. three Cantons unclear in 1308.& calling themselves Eidgenotten which in ye. Germon, means Allies by Oath, but foreigners nam'd them Swiss, after one of these Cantons; they beat ye. Austnans who attack'd them in 1315. at Morgarten.

In 1333. ye. Canton of Lucerne join'd ye. other three, as did Zurik in 1351. Gluris, Zug, & Bern, soon did ye. same; they fought many battles with ye. Austrians ye. most remarkable of which was at Sempach in 1396.

Friburg & Soleure also enter'd into ye. League, in 1481. & Basil, Shafhausen, & Appenzel which makes ye. 13. in 1501.

31577. Ye. Popist Cantons of Luserne, Uri, Switz, Undervald, & Zug, & soon ^ addition after /addition Soleure & Friburg join'd with ye. D. of Savoy to support their Religion against ye. Pro Cantons, who shew'd great zeal for ye. Reformation.

It is greatly to ye. Honour of ye. Swiss yt. they have preserv'd their Liberties, tho' every step has been taken to Rob them of it.

They are a very warlike nation, which makes them serve in foreign armies; there are some in ye. French, Spanish, & Dutch services; so here they stay but a few years; this makes them always able to raise a great & well disciplin'd army.

They are good Neighbours, disturbing no one in his just rights & Possessions.

They have no reason to fear ye. French, who owne them to be their best Troops; yet have been much in ye. wrong, in allowing them to get ye. Franche Comte; & as to ye.H. of Austria she will always keep well with them least they should join with France.
