I know not where my ideas of human nature were derived, --they certainly were not the Offspring of my own feelings, --these would have taught me that interest & duty were blessed with every act of generosity, --but I cannot explain why, deletion unclear /deletion I did not come into the World without my scruples & suspicions; & I was more apt to impute kindness to sinister, & hidden, than to obvious & laudable motives; --I saw no reason why I shd be treated with benevolence, and I who wd have acted feelingly to
