resentment with which he bore this true, unwelcome suspicion, made him ridiculous & the awkward attempts by which he tried to shake it off fluctuating between indignation & anger at the feeling that what he suffered was not a fitting ground underline for addition ^ avowed /addition displeasure. /underline
