[Aylilts] W[?] House June 18th
My Dear Genl
I am happy in acciden
tally meeting with a neighbor of
yrs who tells me he lately left you well
& contentented [second "ten" crossed out] with yr. retired life. I am
extremely anxious for yr. welfare & often [?]-
[?] lament that the temper of this con
-tinent sho^d be such as to render it expedi-
- ent for you to retire to Berkley. When I left
you in Phil^a my wish & expectation was im-
-mediately to go to Europe; on my coming to
Virg^a being under age, I found it diffi-
-cult to make such disposition of my pro-
-perty as wo^d admit of it. I meant however
to go this fall & as I wishe'd to go in the cha-
-racter in the character ["in the character" crossed out] of an officer for
[P. 2]
that purpose I went up to N^e J^sy by Phil^a
(where I wish'd much to have seen you) to re-
trieve from His Excely. L Ld. Stirling a certificate
of my good conduct. This I meant to present
to the Virg^a assembly & from them procure
an appointment. His Excely. gave the
letter I wo^d have wish'd & Ld. Stirling also
[?] with gentlemanly politeness. What
I have to expect from this assembly is
uncertain but as they have no interest in
the appointment I desire I believe I have
no probable grounds to found hopes on.
I am retiring from them to my Uncle’s
Mr. Jones near Fredricksbg.(the Chief Jus-
tice of this state) where I propose staying per-
haps the year. If it was my house my d^r
General you sho^d make it yrs. but at
[P. 3]
present I only live in expectation of it. I may
however take the liberty with my Uncle to press
you if you come that way to call & see me.
Be so kind as write me and direct to Fredricks-
bg to inform me where I may wait on you.
I am solicitous for yr. interest & wish to con-
-sult you on my plan.
I am my dear general
with sincere esteem yr. friend & very hum-
ble svrt.
