of the conversations of this day have been greater on the whole than yesterday, & give no additional hopes of returning reason, however tho' the amendment has not appeared to Me so great this day as to some others, I still am inclined to beleive that amendment continues in some degree. Within the last 48 hours there has been much sleep, & less agitated thoughts than there has been, tho' the general turn of thoughts have invariably continued incoherent & rambling; yet the whole system seems altogether more quiet. When there is sleep, where before there was none, & when less restlessness exists, & less agitation of ideas prevails, I think it may be inferr'd, that some amendment has taken place since the Attack begun - now every succeeding day comes on with the most anxious expectations, which it is much to be hoped will not be kept much longer in ^ addition that /addition lingering suspense which has hitherto attended them.
