the same Conduct since I was appointed so to The Duke of York, & have no reason to repent of my Resolution.
If P. Edward finds £ 5000 P Ann: & the Income of a Regiment on the English Establishment, insufficient for His Expences at Gibraltar, it appears to me, to be a point to be settled by an Application from H. R H to His Majesty personally. The advising an Increase of Allowance beyond what The King has Himself fixed, is, I apprehend, what few of His Subjects would chuse to meddle with; at least I am sure I will not, till I have a much greater Share of Presumption & Impudence than Nature has as yet bestowed upon Me.
When our Friend Symes says, that the drawing for £ 4 or £ 500 on Drummonds underline "is a Latitude He expects" /underline He does not talk the Language of a Man of Business. What He may do from His Majesty, I know not; but from me, as the Receiver of the Prince's Money from Treasury, He has no Right to expect any deletion such /deletion Latitude at all, beyond, the Sum so received. --This, to do Him Justice, He seemed most thoroughly to comprehend before His Departure; & it appeared to me, that whatever Difficulties the Colonel Thought He might eventually have to struggle with, the Disposition & Punctuality of Payments into His Hands were not of the Number.
The 10th. of October is our next Quarter: day; that time will now soon be here, & there then will be due to H. R. H. from Treasury £ 1250. --
The moment I receive it, I shall pay it into Drummond's Hands as I ever have done; & this I apprehend, is all which my Duty can possibly warrant my doing, even if My Means & ability were greater.
I will write to Symes at large upon the Subject in a very few days; if He has drawn at all, He may have done so some time ago; but I have as yet heard of no Draft. I shall echo to Him what I wrote in my former Letters, always explaining to Him the underline Impossibility /underline there must be
