Clarksville Jan: 19th 1864
Tuesday afternoon
Your letter of the 15th has just
been received, and could I believe that
you are not coming home i would have
no words to express my disappointment, as
as it is I cannot believe it, I can’t help feeling
that in a day or two I shall see you – Your
letter was so unsatisfactory, and you did not
state that it would be impossible for you
to come. You spoke of taking me by surprise.
Do you think you could do so? No, for for
every moment during the last eight
weeks I have looked for you – and all
day yesterday and to-day I have been
looking out of the window to see if you
were coming.
It is getting dark and I have my
evenings work to attend to – I hope for a
letter to-morrow if you do not come.

Our boy is lovely –
God bless you. Oh me
I want to see you so much.
Your devoted
wife.
