[?] C.H. May 7th 1864
    My beloved wife,

        The darling boy
the pride of our hearts.  Why can't we
enjoy him together; your letter last
night hurt me almost beside myself,
so great is my anxiety to see him.
I am pleased to leave that some of
my lettres have reached you.  There
is certainly delay some when, or
letters would not be so irregular in
watching their destination.  I have
heard it since we used that the post
Office at this place is very [?] kept
your letters [?] me very much, altho.
your last was written at the time when
you were laboring under a depression
of spirits at least it would seem so from
one or two expressions. You let slip
old lady, it will not do for both of us
to allow [?] thoughts to effect our
spirits for must fight manfully against
the many differences we have to con-
test with, hoping that when [?]
[?] wasn't, that be the day will come

[P.2]

Please remember me to all of my acquaintances
at Carysbrook particularly.  Mr Bryan and his
Page.

[Continuation from P.1]
I am afraid that you have selected
an unfortunate time to pay your
visit to Mrs Bryan and your aunt. your
aunt I presume has been run
off by the Yankees, and at any time
the rascals may make a raid up
in from B neighborhood, and [?]
his family leaving house.  However, I
will hope for the best, as our  great
and good man Lee seems to occupy
Grant's entire attention very effectually.  Grant
service to be taken an unfortunate full,
[?] himself is the [?] [?], and
building at every thing that comes
in his way.  I have every confidence
that [?] [?] Lee is done with him
that he will be as docile as a lamb
and there, and there, we many look for-
ward to gl[?] peace.  I am in hope
that you will enjoy your visits.  [?]
do you think of retaining house?
I may possibly pay a visit of two or
three days to an acquaintance who lives
about forty miles from here.  I understand
that that it an agreeable place to stop by.
    Your devoted
    Husband
