Gordonsville June 10th 1862

My Dear Father

Wishing to let you hear

from me, and to let you know of my

whereabouts every now and then I

begin this letter, though I am sure

you owe me some two or three

letters already.  I have been here for

three or four days with Uncle John

waiting to hear from Major Vann (?)

a friend of Uncle John's, who is

in the Commissary Department.

Uncle  John wrote him about two

weeks ago and I expected when

I left Mr Gordons that he would

have heard from him by this time

Major Vann is stationed somewhere

on the Danville Road and Uncle John

think that I will be able to get

a situation as Clerk in his office

which I think I would like to

have, as he says he, the Major, is a very fine

man and it would be very agreeable

on all sides I imagine if I were

down near my Mothers & Sisters.

Uncle John advises me by all means to

go to Mr Gordons and stay there until

he hears from him.  What do you

think about it?  The chances of my

[2]

being able to join the Rockbridge Artillery

are small In fact I dont think

that their is any chance at all.

Have you received any letters from

Mr. Faunliroy?  We have news here of

that Jackson had whipped Shields

very badly killing, wounding, and

taking prisoners more than five thousand

Yankees that Jackson after the

battle took Coln. Ashby's place and

lead the Calvary in pursuit, and

that Ewell had whipped Fremont

the day before some where else in

the Valley.  Jackson's fight was

some near Port Republic.  I was

very sorry to hear of Colonel Ashbys

death.  I have not heard a word from

any of our Family since Ma left Mr

Gordons except the letter that you

sent me from Ma to you.  I have

written to Sister Hat & Bec but

do not know Mas direction.

Please write to me soon an

let me know how they are

and what they are doing.  I have

not seen anything of Bob Powell.

Was George Adie (?) wounded seriously

You can send letters here via

Lynchburg.  Direct care of Mr.

Gordon.  Your very affectionate Son

C. L. Powell Jr

Love to all when you write.

Will you look in my trunk and send

me my commission as Deputy Marshal.  You

will find it in one of the letters

in my trunk.

Just ________ I wrote him several days

ago & urged him to bring his accounts with Mr.

Martin to a settlement -
