Valley P.O.
Tazewell county                   July 16, 1861
Va.

Gen. Floyd.

of an indiferent militia company
on our (wolf) creek, some of whom volunteered early in the campaign and
entered the service, 14 or 15 more recently, under an impression, that there
would be a draft in 8[underlined] days, volunteered at the urgent request of some of the
publick spirited citizens, were regularly enrolled, the roll called over & answered
in military stile, & the list then forwarded, (as I understand) to head quarters
when Newberrys company subsequently organized, they refused to enter, &
when more recently sergeant [Neel?] came from head quarters with orders
for them to repair thither, they not one bid defiance to the order, but
two of them (I verily believe) talked treason, & acted mutiny, in [thriaten=?]
& defying Gen. Floyd & his cohorts.  I have this from reliable report.
These two are Wm. S. Kidd & Rabe [Burriss?].  Stephen Gose, having three
sons in law, among them, I understand is with them in opposition
to going, & being the Rip Van Winkle of the neighbourhood, his say
so, is regared as paramount to Heavens decrees.  Heretofore he has
exhibited a goodly degree of zeal in the cause, but this is bring matters
too near home.  I understand he is going to the crab orchard to-day,
I suppose to get them off.  The names of the [refractory?] volunteers, are
Wm. S. Kidd, James H [Noel?], Austin Repass, Joel Repass, Agustus Repass,
Rabe Burriss, Wm. E. Maxwell, Anderson Nestor, Madison A Neal,
Wm. Bundy.               The others have entered Newberry’s company.
Bundy has lately cut is foot desperately, with an axe, & cannot go
The others are here in bold defiance of every body.  I know nothing about
their legal technicalities which they are preaching, you know all about
it, & if you have a right to command them, & if Doct. Cannahan
is attached to your Brigade, & if you will issue an order to him to that
effect, I tell you he will deliver them at Camp Jackson in hot
haste                   most truly & surely I am
your obedient servant
