on the morning of the 8th of March
1862. The distance from Stanton
to Harrisonburg is 25 miles. From
Harrisonburg to mount Jackson
is 25. From mount Jackson to
Strasburg 25 miles. From strasburg
to winchester 18 miles. From Stanton
winchester 93 miles. On the 11th
general Jackson received inteligence
that the enemy were advancing
on winchester in consequence of which
Colonel Burke was ordered to march
his forces to the fortifications
beyond winchester at which place
we arrived late in the evening.
The enemy were in sight. The
line of battle were formed about
sunset. About dark a dispach

was received that the enemy were
advancing in greatly superior force.
We had just built fires when
orders were given to retreat
and we fell back six miles
this side of winchester and
struck up fires about midnight.
Early next morning we commen
ced the retreat. We marched 
12 miles and took up camp
near Strasburg. The enemy 
followed us to newtown 8 miles
this side of winchester. Here
here they came in contact with
Colonel Ashbys cavalry who
were on picket covering our
