57. A Ratio is greater as its exponent is greater. Thus the ratio of 5 to 4 is greater than the ratio of 4 to 3; because the exponent of the first ratio, or 5/3 = 1 2/3, is greater than the exponent of the second, or 4/3 = 1 1/3: & in general is a/b unclear the ratio of a to b is said to be greater than the ratio of c to d. For the same reason since c/d < a/b the ratio fo c to d is less than the ratio of a to b. This inequality of ratios is sometimes marked thus, a:b > c:d; or c:d < a:b.
