                             May 1861

Monday 6     Wind SE cloudy & rained at intervals nearly all day.
             Davy & Joshua getting wood. Sent Mr Hogg and all
             the balance of the hands to plant Mr Templeman's
             Corn who is performing military duty at Gloster Point.
             I have heard some firing today, dont know where.
Tuesday 7    Wind SW. Clear. Making up fence which was blown down
             Hauling Rails, Broke up lot at Mr Hogg's house &
             West's lot. I went to Gloster Point, Steamer Logan landed
             a detachment of forty of the Richmond Howitzers & 2 guns
             & returned to West Point for some heavy ordinance -
             Before I reached home A US. Steamer came up to Gloster
             Point (so Lnt Davis informed me who was there) and several
             Shots were exchanged. No damage done us. The Howitzers
             thought they struck the Steamer three times. Certain
             it is she returned as quick as she could.
Wednesday 8  Wind W. Clear. Opening drains with hoes in Corn.
             Planted lot at Mr Hogg's house in Cotton. Made up fence
             that was blown down. I went to Gloster Point. Nothing new.
             No mail today, Two small US. Steamers are constantly
             cruising in Chesapeake & Mobjack Bays Blockading the mouths
             of these little Rivers. They are seen with naked Eye from here.
